Who wants to build me a server?

I'm serious. I might need a file server at my new job, and i want to save some $ doing it. I think I can build one...but that's not what I want to say to them.

I'm thinking gigabit, 100 gig w/reduntantcy, a back-up boot drive, dual 2GHz. Nothing fancy, just solid. I rack style would work.

I've got a Compaq Proliant 3000R available. AWESOME file server.

Dual processor, redundant power supplies, NIC, 2x 4GB drives (OS), 5x 9GB drives (file storage), RAID controller, ~512MB RAM.

RAID-1 the OS, RAID-5 the 9GB drives, maybe increase RAM to 1GB, install Windows Server 2003, and you're in business.

Interested? I'll sell it cheap - just came out of the rack and I was fortunate enough to pick it up. PM me if you want more.

You'd better get something that has a manufacturer's warranty with at least next-day parts, if you don't want to be caught with your pants down.

And ~36GB of available drive space is not really that much.

Sounds like an option Bootay. I have no idea where to begin on the value. 36GB might be enough actually though...

What about gigabit?

I have a Windows Server Pro CD, so that's cool. Can I add HD's? or do I have to upgrade them?

36GB is fine for a file server for office work these days.

comes with a 10/100 card, but there are gigabit cards out almost everywhere.

spare parts abound for this model, that's one of the best things about it. Proliant 3000R was one of the core pieces of the datacenter for a long time. has redundant power supplies, redundant fans, redundant drives with RAID and hot-swap everything.

CPU: 2x 300Mhz
Memory: 128MB RAM, upgradeable (cheap) up to 3GB RAM.
4x 4GB hot-swap drives
5x 9GB hot-swap drives
System holds 7 drives max internally, so you'd have some 4GB spares. Has spare bays for internal backup devices, has CD and Floppy as well.

They got something @ $200 with this many spindles? It's all about spindles for file servers, that and RAM. CPU doesn't matter at all, RAM helps, but you will hit the disk and that's when 7 disks is nice...

Anyway, Dell refurbs are nice. Good stuff for the money.
