We slide constantly through "best album", "best songs", and "best guitar riff under electronic circumstances" polls and stuff, constantly, but I'm just wondering..

I tote daughter all over creation, on a regular basis, to see live tunes everywhere I can, because when I was her age, I was broke and without adult resources. It's kept me a bit younger than I might have been and I really do love everybody we see, from The House of Blues to the Tremont Music Hall to the guy fiddlin' at The Pewter Rose for tips. I still have a Kurt Cobain T-shirt with some quote she thought was wise and apocalyptic back in Jr. High. Not to mention a few she got me at retros from the Big Eighties (when she was born) and various other teenage whatnots.

The whole point of this is...I catch her listening to Beatles stuff on a more than regular basis. When I ask "do you really like that old shit?", she answers, "Dad, you were mighty lucky to have them."

I've tried to be objective about all this, but can anybody tell me who (and yes I'm including Frank Sinatra and Elvis) defined a generation, an attitude, and almost all Western Culture better than them?

you probably couldn't better than them, no. They really just took all levels of music by storm at that time, but some of it because of their poppy remakes of others' R&B at the start. I don't think I'd put Elvis in this either - Elvis was becoming a figurehead and had more of a major cult following by the time the Beatles were big, and I don't know if he lasted that well head to head against them.

the beatles are timeless. consider the fact that that time, they did not have the technology that most artists have now. they simply rock!

my daughter has the beatles in cd. i have them in vinyl. we are a generation apart, but we are very one. great music like great poetry is timeless, IMO.

oops, i forgot one point: it'd be like comparing apples and oranges if i tried comparing them with other legends. just not right. my opinion wont be any good. i grew up on the beatles. i'd be biased.

The Beatles are my favorite. No one comes close. But I'll just say let your daughter take in as much of them as possible. Just make sure the door is open for all the other 'old shit' music. Sounds like you already want her to experience othe music. I hope I'm as energetic as you are when my kids get older.

I'm 31, by the way. Don't have to be an old shit to like old shit music.

Mag, what do you mean by took "all music by storm?"
Don't mean to sound argumentative, but in my circles the Beatles plain sucked.
And, from a purely commercial standpoint they brought guitars and ultimately synthesizers(sp) to a high degree of popularity knocking the shit out or work for hornplayers.

I didn't know how popular they were when I started listening to them.
