Who really thinks the Panthers' interest in Newton is a smokescreen to gain a suitor for a trade down to pick up a 2nd rounder this year and whatever else they can get?

Rivera is certainly not trying to be coy about the fact that he is talking about Cam. Local media is all over it. The Panthers have also let it be known that he will be coming here for a pre-draft workout, which the Observer reported last week.

Though I am not a fan of Newton, I have to admit that the team that picks him will get a ton of news coverage. The Panthers could certainly use that. I don't think they have been any more irrelevant since the year after they went 1-15. Wouldn't having Cam on the roster at least guarantee more coverage and a Monday night game?

This coaching staff also wants to be a teaching staff so they might be willing to work harder to get him ready to play under center.

So, I guess drafting Newton if a trade doesn't happen will be a serious option but at the end of the day I think that Marcell Dareus would be the best choice.

Dareus is a stud. He played hurt all year and was still a standout. If you want to see his best work, it was last year. He dominated Texas' in the National Championship game. He put Colt McCoy out of the game and scored a touchdown on an interception.

If the smokescreen works I like the trade down scenario. If not I think that Dareus improves the Panthers chances to win now. And that is who they should take in the draft if they can't trade down.

Though I am not a Cam Newton fan I could live with him as the pick. Either way this makes the Panthers relevant for 2011 - provided they get the labor thing worked out.

Rivera likes to talk, and as a potential top pick there's no doubt they'll talk to him and learn him. They'll talk to tons of guys.

agree on Dareus, he seems like the guy right now.

I don't think Ron bullshits. He likes Cam. Doesn't mean I do, and doesn't matter. We'll see.

NO smokescreen. I think Cam is the pick.

He didn't smokescreen about wanting a threat at TE - as soon as shockey was cut they paid over $3 million for one year. For Shockey. After last year's actions.

HE said we need a franchise QB. They will take a shot at Newton.

Yes he did say we need a franchise qb. In the same response he also said that the franchise qb could come from the draft, free agency or he could already be on the roster. So quit quoting that as Ron Rivera said we are going to draft Cam Newton.

No FA or trades prior to the draft, and I'm convinced he's wanting Newton.

FA or trades before the draft, it will be McNabb or Palmer. McNabb would actually make sense, as his deep ball is much better than his intermediate to short game, plus: Rex Grossman is the new shit.

Is he? Well, in that case, expect Shanny to reward him with $500 MIL up front.

Suppose the lockout ends right before the draft is scheduled to begin. Will they delay the draft to allow for a pre-draft free agency period? Will they allow trades before, or will everything happen during the draft?
