It is a 5 minute major in the NHL. Sometimes the "3rd man in" can get a match penalty and is tossed from the game.

It is just a part of hockey's culture. Big dudes with lots of adrenaline, testosterone, and a healthy dose of dislike for one another colliding with each other at a high rate of speed = high probability that someone is going to get up swinging.
