Define or describe the ideal attributes and typical responsiblities of a slot receiver vs. a flanker?

They're essentially the same. A slot receiver, unless it's twins to that side, is merely the second receiver in. In that case, the flanker steps up to the line and becomes that side's end.

Keep in mind that usually there's a split end to the side away from the TE and that flanker generally indicates the smaller, faster type player. So in most cases you won't have a bigger posession receiver in the slot unless it's strong left, twins right with the flanker outside.
