Will Grier.

No offense, because I hear he’s a great kid. And he’s a lifelong Panthers fan, and that makes me like him even more. It’s not his fault Marty Hurney was foolish.

I just finished my film review for the magazine and Will Grier sucks ass. As much as I like Hurney's first two picks I would not have spent a seventh round pick on Grier, much less a third. He can't read zone coverage at all, he throws the ball up for grabs when pressured, he predetermines his target, his release is elongated, his throws outside the numbers float, and he has no accuracy on the move. Ryan Finley is boring but he would have been a much better choice as a backup who can start if necessary.
Grier was superb in college at dropping deep balls over the shoulder of his receiver, but NFL teams don't run those routes much precisely because NFL coverage has deep safeties who get over and deflect or intercept vertical routes, particularly looping balls like the ones that Grier throws. His tape reminds me a lot of a less athletic Johnny Manziel because everything is vertical. I didn't see enough accuracy or anticipation on horizontal routes crossing the field, which is what NFL quarterbacks have to do. He'll be a fine backup but I wouldn't have spent a third round pick on a backup quarterback and I doubt that the Panthers would have either if Grier wasn't from Charlotte.
Grier feels like a pick made for the lulz.
