Czaban has a good idea :) :) . . . . . Why not play the Super Bowl on Saturday vs. Sunday? That way, you have a day to recover vs. going into work Monday morning half groggy ? ? ? ?

=============

Move Over, Dead Presidents

There’s nothing wrong with the Super Bowl being on Sunday.

The problem is when the game starts.

I remember when the game started around 3:15 in the afternoon in the east. Yes, I am old.

(CUE Mike Gundy rant: “I’m a MAN! I’m FORTY!”)

Now, the game starts at 6:15 in the east. On a “school night” and “work night.” No good.

Because the game lasts easily 3 and a half hours, you are talking 10 p.m. when people are picking the chips out of your cushions and heading for the door.

How come there’s not more outrage about this?

Granted, any serious football fan is an IDIOT for either a) inviting or b) accepting an invite to a “Super Bowl Party.” Nothing good comes from them, unless you limit invitees to men you have fought with in a foreign war, or have been in your fantasy league for at least 5 years.

Any posers, part-timers, women, clueless football women, hot women you won’t be able to hit on because your wife is with you, ambiguously gay guys like the duo on Mythbusters (not that there’s anything wrong with that..), and metrosexuals like Mike Greenberg are a recipe for a game night disaster.

Think of it this way, fellas. THIS IS THE LAST FOOTBALL GAME OF THE YEAR! Treat it with the reverence and importance it deserves as a fan.

Every distraction you have to battle through during the game (“honey, can you come up here, the burgers need to be served!”) will leave you likely to miss a rich little nugget in the game. A play, a camera shot of a fan, a stupidly obvious line by Troy Aikman – all things you will sheepishly admit to your football buddies on Monday at work: “Oh, I didn’t see that. When was that?”

Now, there is a “solution” to being able to have or attend a Super Bowl party if you are stupid enough/unable to wiggle out of one. Actually, two solutions.

1. “Super Bowl Saturday”
2. Super Presidents Day Bowl Weekend

Under either solution, you could have a game that starts at 6 p.m. in the east for maximum TV ratings (not that the game is um, suffering ya know) and also GO OUT after the game to bars and such, get loaded, sleep in late, and have all day to read the papers and watch highlites.

It’s so simple, so logical, it hurts that it hasn’t been fixed.

I doubt they’ll do “Super Saturday” because it loses the essentially Sunday element to football. They would have to re-write the cliché: “On any given Sunday…” to “On any given Sunday, or Saturday if it happens to be the Super Bowl.”

That would, admittedly, suck.

But Prez day is just another week out in February. If the league decides to extend the regular season to 17 games you could get there. For the record, I’m opposed, for no other reason than it invalidates all previous notions of what constitutes a really good season. For me, that’s 11 or more wins.

Or you could start the season one week later. Or you could add back in a second bye week (boo!).

Or just tell the Government: “Um, you’re gonna need to move UP the 3-day prez weekend for us. We’re the NFL. Thanks!”

All I know, is that the current start time and weekend suck. Some of us have to wake up early on Monday, and we sure would like to get pretty slot-faced while enjoying the last precious football game of the year.

nice to see you're still on Czaban's payroll.

well, just keep posting his opinions. That NEVER gets old.

Mike, don't be so quick on jumping on some people. There are other of your fellow journalists who feel the same way as the author of the article.

Example: this writer from The State newspaper in Cola., SC. I know she's a woman, but she does raise some valid points and she's been writing about hot topics for YEARS at The State.

Super Bowl not at a super time

With the NFC and AFC champions determined nearly two weeks ago, the NFL has had several opportunities to play the Super Bowl at convenient times.

But once again, tradition prevails.

Seems some things about the Super Bowl can’t change — like playing it on Sunday evening, which has to be the worst time to play the biggest game of the year.

It’s not just that it’s a work and school night. It’s the worst work and school night. It’s the night you dread all weekend.

The night when you do laundry so everyone will have clean underwear the next day.

The night kids do the homework they’ve managed to forget for two days.

The night moms try to cook meals for the week.

It’s the night when we all mope about how short weekends are and how much we dread and detest Mondays.

And once a year, we have to squeeze in the Super Bowl on this night.

Kickoff for the 42nd Super Bowl is 6 p.m., which means it will end after many kids’ bed times.

That means many parents will be leaving Super Bowl parties at half-time, and many kids will be sleepy at school the next day because, even if the Patriots are beating the Giants by the 11 to 28 points they’re predicted to win by, football fans are not going to bed until one team is beaming at cameras with their Super Bowl Champion hats on.

The NFL really doesn’t care, so even though it would be more convenient for families to play the game on Saturday, chances are that’s never going to happen.

"That's deeply ingrained," Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesman said before last year’s Super Bowl. "(The majority of) NFL games are played on Sunday, when most people are at home watching television."

There are games played on Thursdays and Mondays and some playoff games were played on Saturday, but OK, most are on Sunday.

The Super Bowl is just one game and it does start at 6 p.m. Other championships, such as the World Series, the Stanley Cup, the NBA playoffs, the NCAA basketball tournament and college football bowl games go on forever, and many of those games start even later on school and work nights.

And parents would like to have a few words with those organizers as well.

As for playing earlier on Sunday, apparently the NFL is worried about those West Coast people.

But what about us in the Eastern time zone?

We’ll keep complaining about it, but keep watching it.

There are actually two efforts to try to fix this Sunday night problem.

Superbowlsaturday.com is an online poll for folks to vote on whether they’d prefer the Super Bowl on Saturday. Earlier this week, 1,466 votes had been cast with 89 percent opting for a Saturday game.

Superbowlmonday.com is a group lobbying to have the Monday following the Super Bowl declared a national holiday.

Earlier this week, that site had generated 15,792 votes in support of that, with 505 voting no.

That would be as good as playing on Saturday.

I'm not jumping on Czaban, I don't even know him. I was pickin at sds, because everytime Czaban sneezes, sds starts a thread about it.

Personally, I don't like the idea of a Saturday SB, but if Czaban thinks its a good idea, so be it. We're all entitled to an opinion,.

I been pimping the Super Bowl on Saturday for 20 years. They make it so damn late on Sunday now you have to take Monday off if you wanna enjoy the party. Plus the beer sales I bet would double. I'd know I'd drink a 12 pack instead of a 6 pack.

Shoot, I wish they played it on Friday night, so I can have 2 days to recover. I don't drink, but I could use the sleep.
