What is the attraction to Dale Earnhardt?

I am listening to ESPN Radio and hearing people say they all but worship DE. He is all but godlike to them. While I only casually follow Nascar I don't understand why people damn near worship him as if he were still alive, and buy his stuff more than ANY other driver alive or dead (OK he is third behind Jr and Gordon). I am not bashing him just trying to understand it.
