we let Gross and Peppers walk, what does that do to our cap situation? Could we sign a QB better than Jake? Could we sign a couple of decent defensive linemen? We cam slide Wharton back to LT and maybe pick up a guard. If not we could play Vincent at RG and Bridges/Hangartner at LG.

Maybe we franchise Peppers and then work out a sign and trade with him for a high draft pick and a couple role players?

Drop Trgo and bring in a more aggressive DC.

I guess my point is that the old 70-80's idea of an LT-type edge rusher is being countered by modern Tackles. Blitz packages are more effective. I would rather see another Charles Johnson/Brayton/Rucker type at DE (or at least someone who can stop the run) and an elite DT.

I should preface this by saying this opinion is relative to the coin that elite DEs make. I would love to keep Peppers, just not at what he is going to get relative to what we could get in on-field production with good scouting at other positions.

I can see that too, I'll admit I'm biased to keeping Peppers since I can't really see any scenario where we get a guy equal to him for a lesser price, and Haynesworth would probably cost a bundle. EDIT: Re your edit, I get what you're saying.

If you look at the better defenses in the league some of them do not have any more talent than we do. Philly has a top defense and outside of Dawkins who do they have that is all that great? The Steelers have a great defense and they do not have a stud like Peppers.

I think a good DC could have a top ten defense with what we have with or without Peppers. We have some good linebackers. Our secondary has some talent but plays way too soft.

Good grief. The unfortunate thing is that you're not even aware of your own stupidity, because if you were, you'd be ashamed and stay quiet. A normal person looks at this statement and their mind boggles because Philadelphia and especially Pittsburgh are stocked with defensive talent. It's so obvious that it's hard to understand how someone would be stupid enough to say otherwise. That's why when another person says something spectacularly dumb, they're compared to you.
