We're after Delhomme

Jake Delhomme doesn't have a big name, but he is expected to have a big following when free agency begins in March. Chances are excellent the Saints' backup quarterback will emerge from free agency as a starter for a new team. Delhomme, 28, might not have Michael Vick ability, but he's a leader who has an instinct for the position. Last year as a restricted free agent, Delhomme drew interest from the Packers and Chiefs. This year, potential suitors include the Cowboys, Bears and Panthers. . . .

Wouldn't break my heart. He's played well when given the chance. The players really seem to rally around him when he's in the huddle and while not great as a passer, he is solid.

Makes sense. Nice insurance in case someone doesn't fall. And we can wait in the draft if there is a guy we like in round 2 or three.

Mags, have you heard anything about Boller taking a fall?

Boller falling? I've heard nothing. Nothing's really happened that I know of to suggest movement, though, unless something really fucked up happened at the weigh ins for the SR Bowl

Do we REALLY want Delhomme?

Jake looks like one of those career backups who gets very cozy (and reasonably effective) in the one system that he knows like the back of his hand. I am concerned that he would come here and struggle for a full year (or more) adjusting to all the foreign elements. I would honestly rather have Manning starting than Delhomme in 2003. He might lose a game or two more, but the youth factor and upside advantage would make Manning preferable IMO. Since Fox and the boys believe in “win now” I suspect that they would start Peete over either in the ’03 opener if Whoever It Is doesn’t look damn near as cozy as Peete at that time.

magnus, Has there been any word that WE are actually interested in Delhomme? I get the impression that Pompei is simply assuming that the Panthers might be interested in JD since we only have a couple of Jokers and an old tattered wildcard in our hand. I know that some Chicago paper leaked the supposed “insider info” that the Bears want Delhomme. I hope that any of our ACTUAL intentions haven’t been announced to the world too.
