We got Wilkins

Will Terrance Wilkins push Michael Bates for a roster spot? Bates has been a great special teams player, especially on kick coverage, but with Walter Young impressing, he's probably 6th as a receiver, and 5th at best at running back. Add to that Wilkins returns both punt and kickoffs while Bates.........well.....we all have seen him returning punts. I was jacked about having Bates back on the club, seeing him and Cooper together on kick coverage, but I have to think Wilkins means Bates is gone.

no way, Wilkins adds depth

You can't add somebody for depth at the position, then cut somebody else, that just leaves you with the same you started with

Besides, Bates and Wilkins will prob return kicks, and Smith will be a back-up

I don't think thats correct. Wilkins adds depth at our wide receiver position, Michael Bates does not add legitimate depth at either wide receiver or running back, imho. Bates adds either depth behind Smith as a kick returner or replaces Smith as the main kick returner. So when you talk about adding someone for depth, we added a 3rd player capable of kick returns. Nobody keeps 3 kick returners unless they contribute significantly at other positions. My point is that Michael Bates may find it difficult to make the roster now that we have 2 solid options in Steve Smith and Terrance Wilkins at returning kickoffs. Bates brings experience and leadership and he is a quality special teams player, but a 53 man roster is difficult and it could boil down to cutting someone like Bates to keep an extra tight end or offensive lineman.

I hope Bates makes the team, I just see the addition of Wilkins, because of his kick returning abilities, as a serious roadblock to Bates making the final cut.

2 are back to return kicks

I see Hankton going before Bates.

We've got a squeeze at WR -

Moose
Smith
Proehl
Wilkins
Young
**Hankton
**Black
**Martos
**St Paul
**Baker
**Johnson
**Dyson (PUP)

If you're gonna whack special teamers, do you keep Bates or Hankton?

I may be a little biased but there is no one to replace Hankton at his position on special teams right now.
