Free agent Wesley Walls will workout with Washington on Thursday, NFL sources told the Washington Times. Walls reportedly has an offer on the table from Tampa Bay and will visit Green Bay in the next few days. The Times also said that the Redskins are not looking to upgrade their tight end corps.

Tight ends do more blocking than receiving in Spurrier's system, and the team is content to enter the season with Zeron Flemister. Walls seems like a bad fit here.

I just don't see the fit in Tampa. He is an upgrade over Dudley, but Dilger and Dudley made a decent combo last year. Green Bay seems a great fit. Tyrone Davis has been with Green Bay for 6 years now and basically just taken up space. Bubba Franks has become a good offensive weapon for Favre, and I can see Walls fitting in very well behind Franks and being a real asset to that team. I hope Walls can land in Green Bay.

Former Panther Walls Weighing Minimum-Salary Offer

The Washington Redskins made a one-year, minimum-salary contract offer to former Pro Bowl tight end Wesley Walls after the free agent worked out yesterday at Redskins Park, and should receive an answer today.




Walls, 37, resisted the Redskins' efforts to sign him on the spot and made a scheduled trip to Green Bay. He likely will choose today from among similar contract offers by the Redskins, Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Wherever Walls signs, he probably will be paid $755,000, the league minimum for a player with his service time. He would count only $450,000 against the salary cap.

Walls was selected to five Pro Bowls in six seasons with the Carolina Panthers but slipped to 19 catches last season and was released in February. Still, he impressed Redskins officials during yesterday's workout, being timed at 4.8 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, Coach Steve Spurrier, tight ends coach Lawson Holland and front-office executives Vinny Cerrato, Pepper Rodgers and Scott Campbell watched Walls run through drills following the club's morning practice on the fourth day of training camp.
