You people amaze me.

We won the NFC Championship on "chicken-shit" decisions, I suppose.

Hey, while most of you were undoubtedly meeting with your webmasters on the design of your new website--www.firedanhenning.com, you may have missed out on a little something. We have won three consecutive games.

-The offense has averaged 25.5 points per game in those three wins.

-The defense has scored a touchdown and given up 17 points per game in those three wins.

-The defense has also created 12 turnovers and sacked opposing quarterbacks 10 times in those 3 games.

-We have rushed for over 100 yards twice in those three games with our backup fullback.

-Jake Delhomme has 672 yards passing, 10 touchdowns, 2 INT's in those three games.


Yet, those three wins still leave so many of you bitter. I heard a moron call up the Panthers' Network Post-Game on my way back to Greenville. The first thing that came out of this dunce's piehole was "We need to fire Dan Henning."

Brilliant. When Ethan Horton asked the man for specific examples in regards to Mr. Henning's poor playcalling, all the caller could muster was "Well...there was a play late in the game where we were running our two-minute drill and Henning called a draw play and wasted time. HENNING IS TOO OLD TO MANAGE THE GAME AND HE NEEDS TO GO!," shouted the moron as he hung up. (Memo to caller: It was a 2nd & 1 draw call....gave us a few yards and a fresh set of downs.)

My point is that Henning is missing several key ingredients to his offense. Oh yea, here's a few:

*Steve Smith
*Stephen Davis
*Deshaun Foster

65% of our 2003 championship offense ran through this trio. In my mind, Henning has shown his competence, if not genius, for his job during this stretch of wins.

If you like high flying offense and wet-paper bag defense, I hear there's a fun team in Louisiana. Go there and bitch.

#1 I'd have run the ball more. It seemed effective and Tampa isn't very good at stopping the run. However they are effective against the pass. Yet we seemed to pass more than run. I'm an advocate for passing more, but you need to go with what works best and to me it seemed running was the better route to take.

#2 I still think its bullshit they had 2 mins and all their timeouts left and didn't take a shot at getting some points before half time.

I'd agree with your second point, to a certain degree. Remember, Delhomme did get sacked on that drive before halftime. Twice, in fact. The call on first down (Draw to Goings) netted 5 yards and put us in 2nd and reasonable. If you want to blame anybody, blame Jake for holding on to the ball for too long on the 2nd and 4th plays of the drive.

Congrats, yes, to Dan for figuring out halfway through the season that without Davis and Foster we can win with the pass. Don't mind all those games we dropped trying to fit Goings and Hoover into a square peg. I really, really wish that any of you that are critical of Trgovac or apologetic for Henning would apply the same principles to both.

I think the calls to hang Henning from a tree are a little too much, and I will admit to considering buying the rope at one time. I cannot too much discredit a man who has had a fine and long career in the NFL.

But I am not sure if this recent alteration of the offense can really be the magic of Henning at work. I mean lets be honest, given his rather steadfast ways for the past couple of decades are we really running the offense of his choice? I have to think there have been some heated staff meetings and Fox has been raising some hell to get some wins before all the good of last year is lost to the history books.

My problem that I have stated quite a bit recently is that our future is limited with Henning and he should retire (perhaps with a little incentive from Jerry) so we can get some new blood in the office. As we head into this offseason Dan will get back his players from the IR and through draft and FA and go right back to his style of offense which to me is not a positive direction for this franchise. I grow tired of the cardiac offense. I like when we score, call me a sellout. But building big leads and keeping them is cool to me. I hate this score enough and let the defense preserve the lead crap we have been doing. It is all great when it works, but look how vulnerable to injury that system and philosophy has made this team. I like Jake the gunsligner. I like the run used to setup the pass. I like my offense to be, well OFFENSIVE.

Thanks for the memories Dan, here is a nice watch and enjoy your golden years...

Recently, with the Carolina Panthers season coming apart and Delhomme clearly, at least from Cox's vantage point, trying to salvage it alone, the quarterback and the outspoken sports talk show co-host had a football conversation. Actually, it was more Cox talking and Delhomme listening.

"He was like, 'Hey, you keep fighting,' " Delhomme said Monday, a day after the Panthers earned their first victory this season at Bank of America Stadium, 35-10 over the Cardinals. "He said, 'It's hard, but this will make you better in the long run. I've been watching you play. You've just got to get it out your hand, set your damn feet. You can tell you're trying to do too much. I'm calling because I care about you and I love you.' "

Bryan Cox is a former linebacker. Remember him getting pelted by Buffalo's used batteries? Remember him busting in Chicago? Remember him wearing "0" in New England?

Anyway, he told Jake to set his feet and settle down. Delhomme credits Cox as helping him. Our staff couldn't get this done in 8 weeks, but a phone call solves it. Baffling.
I don't know exactly how true it is. But we do have a QBs coach - inexperienced offensive assistant Mike McCoy is now technically our QBs coach.


It's not that Henning is a 'bad coach' (nor is Trgo). It's more that I don't like his decisions. Pittsburgh and New England are showing that you can have a run-first offense that's not boring, predictable, and conservative. I like what we do with multiple formations, I like how we look when we're being progressive. But we don't do it unless absolutely necessary, which is a big issue.



All the same, Henning looks great when his simple plays are executed well. He looks bad when they don't. The problem is, a 3rd down and 9 draw looks good when it makes 7 yards, and then we see Sauerbrun. We don't value long, sustained drives the way you'd expect we would.

Who says Henning's plays are simple? They don't have to be roccocco to be effective. When Matchup breaks down our plays, they have just as many facets as the other effective Os. Of course, they may not be as complicated as theO genius Musgrave or Callahan.

And we did take a shot at the end of the 1st half. But we did it intelligently, instead of willy nilly. You don't use the TOs to help the other team. You use them as the plays dictate. Unless you're way behind, you call r easonable plays to get out of deep in your own territory, and THEN you go. Otherwise, you help the other team way more often than you help yourself. This is a strategy followed by many effective, established OCs. We moved a little, then started taking shots, and started taking sacks. So there was no reason to call the TOs. All that would have done is make us punt and give them more time.
