Panthers have eye on White, Spears

Although receiver Troy Williamson and tackles Alex Barron and Jammal Brown are the names most commonly assigned to the Panthers in many mock drafts, here are two other names worth keeping an eye on: Alabama-Birmingham receiver Roddy White and Louisiana State defensive lineman Marcus Spears.

According to sources, the Panthers have shown a lot of interest in White recently, and they sent a team official to LSU coaches about Spears.

Although most experts have them going later in the first round, the Panthers could view them as backup plans if their top targets aren't available or if they trade down.
Spears doesn't bother me all that much but White is WAY WAY overrated.

That might be their thinking. If they get a tackle or whatever 1st then at the 2nd a WR is a possibility.

Roddy White's suffering from being a less talented Williamson - he's just tall and fast. Comes from an even worse offense, and for that matter is just that much less polished. He's all hype, but it seems like most agree that he's going to go between 25-35.

Spears is awfully talented - we don't need an end and that's where he still fits best, but his quick first step, body lean, natural size, etc all suggest he could play DT. He's athletic, and considered strong, but he lifted 19 at combine. Peppers had excuses, Spears doesn't, and Peppers wasn't slated to play inside.

I know what some of you are saying - but wait, Rucker only had ~4 sacks last year, we should replace him, right? Nope. It was a down year for him in sacks, and that's something that's a little troubling. But he still had ~25 pressures, had his run production, was very solid overall. Add in that the team didn't play Wallace a ton (and that Wallace didn't do as much as past years), and you really don't have this huge need. A true down year to follow this, and we really are looking to replace Rucker.

The hole's at DT, and hopefully if they're looking at Spears hard, that's where they're headed with him, but in most schemes he would be the left end.
