Delivering Smiles
Things I liked:
- Almost everything. This will be a boring B&B review because I'm in a pretty good mood, and I tend to make my best product while in a foul mood. That was a solid performance all the way down. Even the guys who will be selling cars next month held their own against a very competent backup QB.
- Van Roten is fucking fast. That guy can fly out there on pulls and outside zone runs. He's not great in pass protection, but he's a legitimately good run blocker. I'll take that.
- McCaffrey is The Bull. He's The Bull, and he's getting over 20 carries a game. Like I said, it will be interesting to see if we even keep Anderson now.
- Moton would undoubtedly get exposed at LT eventually, but he looked solid out there tonight. He's been solid at RT. It you can get Williams back on a discount, and slowly phase out the Kalil Brothers, the offensive line situation suddenly looks much better.
- Haynes made a couple of really nice run defenses, which is critical, and nice to see.
- Colin Jones is pretty good in that "joker" linebacker role. Just keep him away from covering slot WRs and he's useful. That was an outstanding forced fumble on the fullback who will never play another down in the NFL.
- It's a good sign that Jackson can stick his nose in there and make a stop. I was concerned about that aspect of his game.
- I like using Armah as the blocking back in shotgun. It's like having an extra o lineman in there. That's good coaching by The Man With The Big Snake In His Pants.
- Shaq Thompson has been great this summer. I didn't know he'd become such an aggressive, violent run defender. He's a real linebacker now.
- I feel comfortable with Heinieke ever having to make a spot start. He's a good fit for this offense. If something catastrophic happens to Cam (which it nearly did, you fucking showboat) then you can go out and make a trade for Bridgewater or something.
- The WRs have gotten so much better at the scramble drill. In the past, they would just stick in one spot. I'm assuming this is because Shula wanted Cam to have more running room. This is a subtle but significant change in the offense. I loved Wright finding a spot in the coverage on Cam's third down scramble. Good stuff by The Man With The Giant Flesh Pendulum.
- God, Byrd is still fast as fuck. Find a niche for him. If some fuck like Ben Jacobs gets a roster spot over Byrd, I'm going to be pissed off.
- I think I like the Blue on Black. It's weird looking, but kinda fun. I prefer it over the monolithic all blue look.
- The weather. This is amazing stuff. Write a Thank You note to your local synagogue tomorrow.
Things I hated:
- D.J. Moore has kinda sucked. Just calling it like it is. Aside from a few splashy plays, he's looked like a raw player who struggles to beat press coverage. If this is a meritocracy, he might be 5th or 6th on the depth chart.
- Kuechly had one play where he clearly got a bit woozy. If I'm Rivera, I'm hiring someone who's sole job is to watch Luke Kuechly in preseason games, and if anything is even slightly suspicious, he comes out. That's what I would do, if I were Rivera. I would hire someone who is extremely detail oriented, and is extremely dedicated to his team. That would be a good move by Riverboat Ron.
- Crappy, crappy fan turnout for a Friday. WHERE WAS THE ROARING RIOT?? Granted, I wasn't there, but I have an excuse. It's called distance. I live 90 miles away. What is with the Charlotte fans who either dumped their tickets to Pats fans, or just didn't even fucking show up. I thought we were "changing the culture", gang. What's the deal?

- A lot of soft coverage calls on defense. I hope Washington is simply not showing his hand. Sean Payton is going to have the broom out again if this is how we look in season.

- The corner with the long ass hair who got flagged for PI late. This is probably your only taste on NFL football. Don't you want to have a better look than this. When you show your kids and grandkids pictures of you in action, don't you want their first thought not to be "what the fuck is hanging out of your helmet". Get a god damn haircut. Good God, man.
