So here we are 11 months after we sent our first round pick to SF for Everette Brown.

If EVERYTHING played out the same, and we didn't make the trade, we'd be in desperate need of a DE and at #16 looking at Jason Pierre-Paul or Everson Griffen.

So the question becomes, would you rather have Everette Brown with a year of NFL experience under his belt or one of the above rookies.

Yeah, I know you can't say things would be exactly the same. Maybe if that was the case we'd have topped Jax's 4/$26mm deal with an injured Kampmann, or hired VandenBosch for similar money.

But I guess in retrospect the trade looks pretty decent right now.

if Brown looks more like an every down starting DE this year then yup, it was a good trade <period>

maybe he'll be smart and dedicated enough to take the step up . .. sure hope so

FWIW - we got Brown and Mike Goodson in the trade.

well, you always pay a premium when trading future picks. The value wasn't that fantastic, and Hurney does tend to have a "fuck it, let's make this happen no matter what" ideal. I don't know whether the initial idea in the trade was to use the 58 pick or not, but certainly I hope we don't trade future 1s.

as a part of that trade, of course, we do also get a 1st round player, with a year's worth of coaching, at a second round price. On the pro market, that 2nd gets you a guy with a high first round pricetag and an enlarged heart.

Brown was very good in limited time later in the season, and he allows us to let leave a player we couldn't pay. Guys like this aren't easy to find, and he was so much better than the other guys available around there.

Im fine with the trade, we got Peppers replacement in case we couldnt sign him long term. Give Hurney credit for planning ahead

I won't be complaining about it. Looks like it is working out as intended.

I like this trade better than the one we did to get Otah and Stewart. Stewart is great but we already had DW.....

Only thing that bothers me is that we have been great at drafting our 1st rounders. They are literally our core. Gross, Gamble, Davis, DW, Beason, JStew and Otah. Pretty impressive. Not too many people have that many productive players in the 1st round. On the other hand our 2nd rounders in that same time..... Apart from Marshall and Kalil have we gotten much? Obviously it's all relative and could just be coincidence but damn.
