From what I've read, the best case scenario for DeShaun Foster is six weeks. It could be up to ten, and that puts him on the shelf for the majority of the season. That's a lot of games to hold open a roster spot, especially when there's already one on hold for Steve Smith. Injured reserve is a definite possibility for either guy, but nothing is definite at this point.

William Hampton is another story. He is definitely out for the year. Eddie Jackson could be brought up from the practice squad as a replacement, though it's more likely that if anyone is brought up from the practice squad it will be Joey Harris since the Panthers are desperately thin at running back. Bringing a guy up from practice squad might actually make more sense than an outside guy or a trade given that the team is pretty tight against the cap.

But then there's a couple other guys to consider. Right now, the Panthers are only a week or two away from being able to activate Bruce Nelson or Drew Carter from PUP. They'll have a three week exemption, but after that if the Panthers decide to keep them on the active roster, a space will have to be cleared. At that point, it wouldn't be a big surprise to see Smith or Foster placed on injured reserve. Nelson and/or Carter could also go to IR if the team isn't satisfied that they're healthy enough.

And what about Shane Burton? The terms of his injury settlement allow him to be brought back after week twelve. If the defensive line depth continues to struggle, it's conceivable Panther fans could see him back on the field again. As with the others, there would have to be a space made. Of course, at this rate, there's likely to be one (or two, or three).

It's beginning to turn into a bit of a shell game.

(and I haven't even mentioned Stephen Davis)

Burton can't be brought back until after week 12.
I thought it was week six. I'll have to look it up.

Edit: You are correct, week 12. I'll amend my post.

he ain't coming back
I don't think so either. Not this year anyway. I think he'll probably be placed on IR when their window is up if not before.

Still, I have to admit I was surprised when the coaches put him on PUP rather than injured reserve. I assume they did that for a reason, but whatever it was is unknown to anyone but them at this point.
