"sun spots"

Other than avoiding shooting directly towards/around the sun or other light sources, is there a way to avoid these? Will a polorizing filter help? ND Filter? Anything I can do to fix them in post?

i actually like lens flares, but that's cuz i come from a computer imaging background where things like a shallow focus and optical "mistakes" are more intriguing than absolute perfection.

however, i do believe that a lens hood would help.

lens hood helps with contrast, too.
