"Strip and Rip" a good philosophy?

Question:

Does "strip and rip" philosophy lead to poor tackling technique? Does it detract from the defensive instinct to deliver a solid hit?

I like that approach from defensive ends, since the quarterback is more vulnerable to fumbles. I don't like it in the open field unless some other defender already has the ball carrier wrapped up.

Rivera stated in his first presser that they were going to get back to tackling. I think tip drills and strip and rip are great ideas to go with fundamentals. My only worry is that, unlike saying you want to stress the TE (done before we signed Chud if you remember correctly, or at least if I do) is that you don't just throw money* at the problem, requires drilling, live. And there's clearly less live scrimmaging than when he was hired, so it may be a work in progress.

But I do expect it to be the bigger stress over strip and rip.

I thought I remembered that correctly as well...Rivera said something to the effect of nobody knows how to tackle on this team and he was going to fix it because that sort of thing drove him crazy (paraphrasing, obviously).

I think everyone knew the Panthers usually suck at tackling. More often than not the back 7 rely on dropping a shoulder into them and trying to knock them off their feet. If Rivera can actually get them to wrap them up when tackling he deserves a bonus from JR.

Some of that has to do with injuries affecting depth, but you're right that tackling needs to be worked on in practice. That said, I can't remember a time where a tackle was missed because someone was going for the football, they just haven't been getting in the right position and squaring up.

A lot of the poor tackling is bad position. These guys aren't playing well right now. You can't tackle a carrier if you're running at a point in which the opposing player will be past by the time you get there. Angles suck, no one seems to be playing sound fundamentals, and we're still trying to figure out a complex D in which has already been scaled way back.
