The latest Sporting News mag ranks the best draft general managers by using every 1st round pick they have ever made. Marty Hurney came up as the 3rd best, just behing Ozzie Newsome & Bill Polian.

I for one think he's done a hell of a job since he was hired. I'd rather see him kept over John Fox.

He got assraped by Jake's agent last year, you can say he's hit on his first round picks but there's more to being a GM than that and we've had sketchy results beyond the first round and had overpayment in both extensions and free agency.

Then that means there are alot of shitty GM's. Hurney failure is in the 2nd,3rd and 4th rounds where we should be getting solid back-ups. And overpayment of certain players.

I think Hurney has done a decent job. I think we could have a lot worse in that job. The biggest issue I have had with him was the decision to extend Morgan instead of Spoon.

I think that was more a case of they could only keep one and Morgan was a very, very good MLB that had all the right tools. Just bad luck that his style of play led to the concussions. He still remains one of my favorites Panthers.

Spoon, I'd like to have kept him but hindsight, as they say, is 20-20.

I would agree. My first thought was, "That says a lot more about the other GMs than it does about Hurney."

I keep hearing about how Jerry Richardson is one of the top owners, and how Hurney is one of the most respected GMs in the business. So why is it that 8-8 is the norm, and when we go 12-4, the league and the media go WTF??

That not quite add up for anyone else besides me?

Even Hurney's drafting skills are a little overrated. When you screw up three second round picks in a four year span ('03-'06), you're not doing that great of a job.

for a young franchise, try 8th best record over the past 8 years with teams of high character players and coaches and an organization that has shown loyalty and class to its players. (you might want to compare the panthers record with Jacksonville and Houston). it hasn't been caught cheating like NE, hasn't put up with sordid crap like they have in Dallas, they don't air their differences nor make whimpy excuses nor defend their actions in the press, nor do they tar and feather players or coaches in public even when they probably have every right to so to some of them. i like the fact that they don't treat players simply as numbers and pegs. we are very fortunate to have such a classy organization that also wins more than its fair share of games to root for. it starts with Richardson and continues with the type of management and coach he has brought in. there are probably 25+ other NFL cities that'd love to trade their team for the Panthers. we might not be the class of the NFL but were damn close to it.

If nothing else, the Delhomme extension should have dropped him 20 spots in the rankings.

Look at our expansion brothers Jacksonville. They're a mess, hell they cant even sell out their stadium. They'll prob end up in LA in the next couple years!
