that rule is only in coaching candidates.... but I see your point

They shouold just go ahead and make a mockery of the whole thing and line up like 15 black high school coaches and pay for them to spend a week in NYC for an interview then come out and hire whoever they wanted to in the first place.
That policy just plain pisses me off.

what if no blacks agree to be the "token" interview...like what happened to millen? I guess that's Denny Green's duty now that Marvin Lewis got a HC job

John Clayton said this AM that he liked Luvvy(sp?) Smith to go to Atlanta and Dennis Green was mentioned as a possible coach for either Miami (thatd be a twist) and or Arizona. Miami would do very well with Green IMO with the talent that is on D and his creative O provided they could snag the right guy at QB.
He did mention that Coughlin was pretty much a lock for NY, but that the Mara's would follow the proper highering mandate. I agree though who would want to interview as a lame duck interview. The only positive I see would be to earn a recomendation from Mara to another Gm or owner.
Clayton also mentioned that he wouldnt be surprised if there were a fireing that not many expects like a Holmgren or someone like that. I would imagine that if Holmgren were canned he could land pretty quickly at any spot available.

The thing is, they're not expecting blacks to be hired. By going through the interview process, a coach grows. it's a lot harder for an assistant to do his own job, day to day, and prepare the volumes and volumes of preparation that a coach has to bring to a head coaching job, without having an interview or two to fill in his blanks.
it's a way to get a foot in the door, and right now, that makes sense. The league's actively trying to get black assistants into the league, and that's working as well. A lot of former NFL players end up coaching now, because of what they've done. And that's part of it - a lack of quality minority options. With good reason, too. You make, say, an average of $500k a year. Now you're going to take less than a tenth of that - if you're not interning - to work 12 hour days, six days a week? Not always enticing. Hell, at the high school level some of the good ones put in too much time. It's why I never pursued it.
Nonetheless, the NFL's pushing some guys who are interested, and some of them are decent quality, including our own Martin Bayless. Martin was a player for the Bills, Skins, and Chiefs, and was a player development assistant for a couple years. Now after the NFL sent him to Amsterdam to coach DBs, he's here helping us with what Alvin Reynolds did for us for a number of years (Al is now DBs coach with the Jags), since Ken Flajole is now helping Sam Mills and Sal Sunseri (Sal himself had this job last year).
