Both sides hope to have 1st-round pick signed before training camp

The agent for Carolina Panthers first-round pick Chris Gamble said Thursday he hopes to have his client under contract by the time the team holds its first training camp practice July 31. But Carl Poston stopped short of making any promises.

"You always want to get your guys signed before camp," he said. "It's not always easy ..."

Poston hasn't been afraid to have his clients hold out in the past. Former Panthers running back Tshimanga Biakabutuka had a lengthy holdout in 1996. But Gamble said in June that he told Poston he wanted to avoid a holdout.

Although the sides have talked since the draft, Poston said he and the Panthers have only started talking contract numbers in the past few days. He said it's unlikely a deal will be finished before next week.

"Are we close on numbers right now? No," Poston said. "Can we be before the start of camp? Yes."

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney doesn't comment on contract negotiations, but said earlier this week he is optimistic a deal can be reached before camp. Gamble and fifth-round choice Drew Carter are Carolina's unsigned rookies.

There are some rough guidelines for the Gamble negotiations. He was the 28th pick and is likely seeking an increase on the contract signed by last year's 28th pick, Tennessee cornerback Andre Woolfolk.

Woolfolk signed a four-year deal that averaged $1.4 million a season, including a $1.4 million signing bonus and a $2 million option bonus for a fifth year. This year's 27th pick, linebacker Jason Babin, signed a five-year deal with Houston that averages $1.405 million. It includes a $2.2 million signing bonus.

doubtful. He may count $1 million against the cap when you include any cap penalties, but the base salary won't be that high at year 3.

No. Won't happen. Most of the defensive contracts are relatively short on payment, large on bonus. Doubt he pulls $1 mil salary in any of the seasons on his contract.


WP's base numbers look good. But I'm thinking $3.5 mil or so on the bonus - at min - maybe less if there are a lot of workout bonuses or more if there's a split. More likely to be a split than an option bonus, or they could make it a roster bonus. Same difference in the end.

Babin got shat on the bonus side. But he got $2.2, 1.25 mil, and $150k.
