5th round selection Tim Shaw
Strengths: A blue-collar, overachieving type player. Reads and reacts quickly. Takes solid angles in pursuit and displays adequate-to-good closing burst. He shows good wrap-up skills in space. Rarely takes false steps or gets out of position. He reads quarterbacks' eyes well in zone coverage and gets good depth in his drop. He has some physical limitations in coverage but shows good instincts, reaction skills and toughness when working one-on-one versus running backs and tight ends. He also is a relentless pass rusher. Has shown a willingness to contribute in many different roles. He has been versatile on defense throughout his career at PSU and he also has the ideal mentality to contribute on special teams in the NFL. Good mental capacity to pick things up quickly. Displays an outstanding work ethic. Comes from a solid background and has good overall intangibles.
Weaknesses: Possesses adequate but not good size, especially when playing strong-side. Lacks a thick lower body and plays with somewhat of a narrow base. Struggles to get off of blocks and will get engulfed by bigger blockers in the phone booth. He is physical and aggressive but he lacks explosive power as a hitter. He is a bit stiff in his hips. Lacks ideal ball skills and has never been a big playmaker in coverage. He missed two games in 2004 due to a sprained ankle.
Overall: Shaw arrived at Penn State as a running back, played in 12 games as a true freshman in 2002, and rushed for 59 yards on 14 attempts and caught one pass for nine yards. He then switched to linebacker and was redshirted for the 2003 season. In 2004, Shaw played in nine games (six starts) at middle linebacker registering 50 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, one interception, and one fumble recovery. Shaw's performance was hindered by a lingering sprained ankle that kept him out of the Purdue and Northwestern games. He started 11 of 12 games in 2005, finishing with 76 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. In 2006, Shaw started all 13 games -- 11 starts at defensive end and two starts at inside linebacker -- and recorded 44 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, seven sacks, and one fumble recovery, earning him honorable mention All-Big 10 recognition (coaches).
Shaw played out of position as a defensive end during his senior season. In our opinion, he's best suited to play the "SAM" or "MIKE" linebacker spots in the NFL. He lacks ideal size at "SAM" and ideal fluidity/speed at "MIKE", but he's athletic, intelligent and tough enough to overcome those physical deficiencies as a versatile reserve linebacker at the next level. He also should make a fine special teams' contributor. Shaw is a fringe first-day prospect in 2007.

I remember Mark Maye talking about Shaw and saying that he was underrated because he played next to Posluzny.
