Senior Bowl

Even Carson Palmer who's been on the rubber chicken circuit since winning the Heisman Trophy last month was only 220-pounds at 6-feet four and a half inches. Possibly the most surprising measurement of the day was LaMarcus McDonald, the tough, run stuffing linebacker from TCU known for his intimidating style of hitting. Just touching the scale at 6-feet, the skinny framed McDonald weighed only 209-pounds"

coaches all say that the senior bowl is the most importnat workout for the players. the week of practice they get will go a long way toward draft status. keep an eye on who does well here.

Here's ESPN notes for Monday.

MOBILE, Ala. -- Here's what the scouts are saying after watching Monday's practices for the 2003 Senior Bowl:

South practice -- Jan. 13
With QBs Carson Palmer, Chris Simms and Kliff Kingsbury on the South roster, the UMS football facility was lined with NFL scouts who were treated to great performances by Palmer, Florida WR Taylor Jacobs and USC RB Justin Fargas.

Palmer, the Heisman winner from USC, was impressive. He looked fluid in the pocket and put nice zip on the ball. Palmer's delivery is smooth, almost effortless. He also exhibited the confidence necessary at the NFL level. Palmer started his Senior Bowl week in a perfect manner -- and the personnel people don't expect any drop-off.

As for the other highly-regarded South QBs, it was some good, some bad. Simms, the Texas QB, showed terrific arm strength. The kid's got a cannon. His footwork was solid and he threw a tight spiral, but his delivery tends to include a little too much sidearm motion. Simms needs to work on his accuracy and anticipation during the week. The questions for Texas Tech QB Kingsbury revolve around his arm strength. He connected on a couple of nice deep routes, but needs to work on his velocity and elongated throwing motion. After spending much of his career in the shotgun, Kingsbury has trouble "riding the center." He needs work on the center exchange.

Fargas took the spotlight at running back. He was explosive through the hole today and showed good speed. He also exhibited adequate hands in pass routes. Keep an eye on him this week.

The other star of the South practice was Florida's Jacobs. The former Gator flat out caught everything. Jacobs also displayed good speed and quickness.

Other observations: Southern Miss offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges grabbed the attention of scouts. At 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, he proved to be a terrific athlete and stood out on the line. Georgia OL Jon Stinchcomb played a little light today and needs to prove he can anchor a line. His teammate, WR Terrence Edwards, exhibited good quickness but needs to work on his strength. UCLA tight end Mike Seidman needs to work on his quickness. Proving he can block would help his stock immensely. The Miami defensive linemen, Jerome McDougle and Andrew Williams, were much shorter than expected.

ESPN's notes for Tuesday's practice.

MOBILE, Ala. -- Here's what the scouts are saying after watching Tuesday's practices for the 2003 Senior Bowl:

North squad -- Jan. 14
Much like with the South team yesterday, scouts paid special attention to the quarterbacks at Tuesday morning's North practice. Louisville's Dave Ragone and Cal's Kyle Boller both showed off a strong arm. The Senior Bowl week will be very important to Ragone. If he performs well, he can elevate his draft status after a season competing with limited talent around him. Iowa State's Seneca Wallace had good accuracy and quick feet, but is small in stature. The Cyclone QB ran some routes with the wide receivers. Last year, Antwaan Randle El starred as a college QB before converting to WR, but Wallace is a much better passer than Randle El.

Penn State RB and Heisman finalist Larry Johnson is a back built for power, not speed. Johnson didn't exhibit a lot of explosiveness to the hole, but did break some tackles. A one-back offense would suit his talents.

The receivers on the North squad had a good morning. Utah State's Kevin Curtis showed good speed and quicks. He also caught the ball well. Curtis needs to work on his strength as he struggled vs. press defense. Notre Dame's Arnaz Battle ran nice routs and exhibited good speed. Penn State's Bryant Johnson was smooth, fast and ran fluid routes. His ability as a return man will help him. Arizona's Bobby Wade showed speed, quicks and elusiveness. Middle Tennessee State's Tyrone Calico is a tall, long-strider with build-up speed. He needs room to get going and will have to work on getting into and out of his breaks. He also dropped a few passes this morning.

Michigan tight end Bennie Joppru caught the ball well, but needs to exhibit more physical play as a blocker. Rutgers TE L.J. Smith went home with a hamstring injury and will be replaced by Arizona State TE Mike Pinkard.

Washington State DB Marcus Trufant didn't disappoint. He showed good cover skills and solid strength. Notre Dame DB Shane Walton has great instincts and awareness. He'd be a good fit for a team that plays a lot of zone coverage.

There were three offensive line standouts this morning: Wisconsin's Ben Johnson, Illinois' Tony Pashos and Iowa's Eric Steinbach.

For those that wanted us to take LJ with our first pick. I was kind of undecided about him for a while but a power back with little or no explosiveness is not someone I want to spend a 1st round pick on.
