Screamin' preachers on the street.

The Greek (born in Greece and moved to St Louis when he was 12) had never seen a roadside preacher scream and try to scare people into getting their souls saved. He recently moved to upstate SC and we met yesterday in downtown Hendersonville for supper.

We were walking past this group of guys in suits and ties screaming and thumping their Bibles at people as they walked by- even screaming in the windows of passing cars stopped at a stoplight.

The Greek asked what they were doing and I said "trying to save lost souls."

'But why'?

"Because the Bible says to."

'What if they don't want their souls saved?'

"It is their duty as a Christian to save you anyway."

'Why do they grunt and gasp at the end of every sentence while they are screaming?'

"Lack of oxygen."

.....

The conversation went on for ages with me trying to explain the rational of hard-core southern baptists to him.

Have you ever thought about how hard it would be to try to explian your religion (or the religion you were raised) to someone from a different culture and without much experience on the topic?


BTW- The screamin' preachers all got tickets for disturbing the peace.

We have those guys here. Every sunday at one intersection. Signs saying your going to Hell, screaming at cars waiting for the lights. I think they must have permits though because they're there every sunday.

I don't think these guys had a permit since they got a ticket. There were 2 cafe's within 100 yards of them with people trying to enjoy their meal outside.

But the Bible doesn't say to do it in that fashion, and what's more, there's plenty of examples of how to spread the Word. I've always thought that ironic.

But when you're trying to explain what's going on to someone who's laughing their ass off, you just go for the basics.

Yes, I've done it before. Now I look back on it and wonder if I sounded or looked like Tom Cruise trying to explain Scientology to a Christian raised like myself.

FWIW, the guy down uptown has never been harrassed by the cops - which is the way that it should be.

And I have never had a problem explaining the concept of preading the word to anyone. If he was Greek Orthodox, I am suprised that he had any questions at all.

yes he's Greek Orthodox.

I think they have to have a permit to do that kinda stuff and this guy was sticking his head in car windows as they stopped at a light. I'da dotted his eye!
