Nolan would have made a good head coach. The big mistake was giving him, a career assistant, complete control over the entire operation. It was obviously way over his head.

shitty, shitty, shitty, shitty ownership. Debartolo was obviously a very good owner. His sister is a useless cuntbag whose franchise management makes Mike Brown seem both competent and profitable.
Plus, the Coach/GM duality has never worked. It's been the downfall of two of our coaches. It obviously helped cause them to burn a #1 pick for the wrong reasons, they've grossly overspent, and still don't seem to be that talented.
Nolan's original concept was a good one. He's been plagued with DC troubles, lost McCarthy to GB, and Singletary, for being a rising star, I don't think was ever ready for the DC job or a heavy leadership role. It'll be interesting to see how he takes this role.
It was interesting to me that both Sam Mills and Mike Singletary had a shot at DC jobs with their teams and decided they weren't ready. Obviously it would've been interesting and a lot less heartbreaking to see how Sam's coaching career would've progressed. Singletary not advancing to DC was interesting, and he has a promising future, but between that and this "opportunity" to take over a sinking ship for lack of a better situation, it's hard to say he's going to be on any short lists for next year, if he's even looking out for that.
Agree about Mooch. He wasn't perfect, but he was a handpicked long term coach. They were willing to part with a Super Bowl winner to get him, and he's been better than anything they've had since. They ran a lot of talent out of there, in part, because of Owens, and that didn't last another calendar year (and then botched that trade to the point that the league stepped in).

Nolan has put some solid pieces in place. They never had a quarterback and they were never good up front, on either side. You're not going to win many games in that situation.
But there is some talent. They will need to do some serious restructuring within the organization to be successful, though.

Would've been helpful if Nolan didn't get into a media fight with Alex Smith over his health/ability. Nolan also seems to have alienated the local media, which doesn't help when dealing with clueless owners.
