Rucker and Gross are both arguably top three available at their position in a weak free agent class, but does resigning either of them (to an over-valued deal) actually make us a better team?

He's UFA, so this is likely just a note from his agent to the rumor mills that he's interested.
I think we've made it a foregone conclusion that we won't keep him, but maybe we will. Don't know if he's enough, which I hate; if he could stay in on run downs and have another year to impart on our youth, that'd be awesome. A bonus would be if he could chip in some rush from the inside on passing downs. But if he's here, do we adequately go after a guy who can get us ~8-10 sacks and upgrade the rush?

Defensive end Mike Rucker is coming back, but he's not sure whether it will be with the Carolina Panthers.
Rucker's agent, Peter Schaffer, said Sunday that Rucker decided during their meetings in Phoenix this week to return for another season.
There had been speculation that Rucker might retire.
"Mike is fired up, motivated and looking forward to continuing his career," Schaffer said. "It's 100 percent."
Rucker, 32, has played his entire career with the Panthers but is eligible to become a free agent Feb. 29.
"In an ideal world, Mike would love to play his whole career in the same place and be with the Panthers," Schaffer said. "Obviously, they have some decisions to make and we'll see where where the next month takes us."
The Panthers hadn't heard anything official from Rucker, but they plan to meet with him soon, Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said Sunday.
"The way we left it with Mike was we would sit down after he'd had a while to think about things," Hurney said.
Asked if the Panthers would be interested in re-signing Rucker, Hurney said the first step would be the meeting.

Make him a pass rush specialist so he don't get burned out by the end of the season.

I expect he would be better next year than he was this year being farther removed from his knee injury.

I wouldn't sign him. Just another step by this team to continue to hold on to the old guard and show an unwillingness to bring in fresh talent and develop it. Maybe if he'd take close to league min. and understand he's not assured a starting spot, but that'd be the only way.
