Rock Band 2 - first take

It's GREAT.
Got it at Wal-Mart at 12:30am or so, they don't have instruments (but they think they do, they're all RB1). Heading to best buy at 11am to get the rest of the gear.

The challenges and band battles are GREAT.
The new songs are GREAT.
The new character creator is awesome.
Characters/bands don't transfer over, start fresh.
Songs from RB1, if you've done the export, just show up, nothing to be done. DLC just shows up. I've got 250 songs now...
One character being able to play all instruments ROCKS.
New song picker/music store is GREAT.

Overall, it's GREAT.

Played 6 hours today.

Game is available everywhere.
Instruments are not available ANYWHERE. Gamestop had the drums, but I think they're sold out - I got one set, last in the store I found. Guitars are likely coming into stock in the Gamestops early this week. Walmart and Bestbuy are a joke, I drove to several places because they said they had hands on instrument stock, but when you get there all they have is the game. Unreal.

The game is fantastic - tons of small improvements, lot's of great new music, and the challenges, band battles, and new tour modes are great. I can't wait to do the drum practice, it's basically a mini-game by itself.

The new character creator is AWESOME - you can make a superhero, a disco dancer, a class rocker, a metal maniac, a bikini model, etc. You can finally get real mics (including the microbone ) for singers, and TONS of new instruments for the others. Being able to have a single character play any instrument, and not having a fixed band leader, is REALLY great.

The new drums are GREAT - much quieter, little pads on the bottom keep it from sliding (unless you're a maniac), and I can't wait to add the cymbal pack.

The band battles are really fun - you battle your friends scores in specific challenges, then if you're the #1 person in your friends list for that challenge you start taking on the rest of the world. If your score is beaten, you get pinged when you startup, which promotes more interaction with friends and small sense of competition that RB1 just had zero of. More replayability .

Yeah, but it's not the same on the Wii - basically a playstation 2, the funky controllers do nothing for a game like RB...limited character creation (not enough HP in the Wii to dynamically render custom characters), limited ability to get new songs, limited ability to play online with others. But if you can look past that, it'll be out Nov. 16.

I laugh everytime I ask my friends if they've played any good PS3 games and they say "no, but we watch a lot of blu-ray movies."
