From Gantt:

• EXTRA POINTS: Agent James Ivler, who represents cornerback Ricky Manning Jr., said Wednesday he's fielded several calls regarding the restricted free agent. He said no visits were set up and no firm offers made, but he anticipates more interest as the market plays out. If Manning is signed away, that team would owe the Panthers a third-round pick as compensation. ...

Let's pray someone coughs up 3rd round compensation for RMJ.

RMJ was a better cover corner than he is at nickel. Some coaches will have you believe (and there's merit to it) that playing nickel is more difficult than playing outside. More to be aware of. He's physical, more so than Gamble. But he just gets lost too many times inside, particularly on rubs.

:umno:
You have that backwards. RMJ was exposed as a starting corner, especially after the rules about contact were instituted. He's much better when playing the slot receiver because he can be more physical there and has a more limited area to cover. He's also pretty decent in run support. But yeah, I'll take the third.

Manning was mediocre as a cover man in the slot, in spite having the added advantage of playing receivers more physical. He was never great to begin with, which I think you will agree with me on. I agree that he was exposed outside too, but he simply was not good enough in coverage as a nickel.

FWIW, Gamble gets torched quite a bit, too.

RMJ was good before they changed the rules and you could match him up with small guys he could handle. He covered Marvin Harrison and Tory Holt well. He punked the Philly wideouts. He is just not as good now that the rules have changed.

I would not mind getting a third rounder for him. He is gone after this year anyway. Wesley could be our third corner.

Wesley is UFA and I'd be suprised if they re-signed him.

The nickle back doesnt have to play the slot. A couple years ago when someone, maybe Wesley, came in, one of the starting corners, maybe Cousin, moved to the slot.

I'd take the 3rd for Manning too.

The Nickle always plays slot. The position is CALLED the Nickle position. However the 3rd CB can come in and play outside and one of the others can shift into the Nickle position.
