are there hotels within walking distance?....is the area safe? Are there cabs at hurricane games? My goal is to avoid a DUI.

There's the Blue Ridge Ramada Inn, which is about a quarter-mile away. There's also a Residence Inn (I think that's what it is--I can do a drive-past and confirm that if you like) right across the road from the arena.

The area is actually quite safe, insofar as you won't get mugged while walking back to your hotel. You can also get a cab pretty easily, if your goal is to go tipple a few at a local watering hole before or after the game (I recommend Playmakers on Hillsborough Street).

from what I've read, that probably is the residence inn...and they take dogs so that's probably where I'll stay....thanks

I figure there probably isn't going to be much of a season if any next year so if I want to see the wings I best go on January 2nd.

There's a Senior Citizen's Center (actually ran by Marriott) on the corner of Duraleigh and Edwards Mill... just shit in your pants and wonder around the front doors and they'll take you in for the night.
