JOSE, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have asked a judge to prevent the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Carolina Panthers from wearing their uniforms for games in California because they violate the Raiders' trademark rights.

The Raiders claim Tampa Bay's pirate logo is too similar to Oakland's. And the Raiders object to the Panthers' uniforms because two colors -- silver and black -- match those of the Raiders.

NFL spokesman Joe Browne said the issue is one of a handful that remain from a 1996 suit by the Raiders listing multiple grievances against the league. Some were transferred to courts in Los Angeles, where another Raiders case against the league is being fought.

Others already have been dismissed by Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge John Herlihy. He did not rule Tuesday on the Raiders' efforts to seek a court order against the NFL banning those uniforms in California.

Papers filed by the Raiders in the San Jose case say the Buccaneers' logo "is likely to dilute the distinctive quality of the Raiders' mark, thereby lessening its capacity to identify the Raiders and causing irreparable harm that cannot adequately be compensated by an award of damages."

NFL attorneys argued there will always be overlap among logos and colors. One of them, James Hunt, said "Michigan could say any uniforms featuring predatory cats" would be prohibited in that state, given that the Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars also have such animals in their logos.

Herlihy seemed sympathetic to the NFL's position.

If California tells Tampa Bay to wear a new uniform for games here, he said, then Florida might say "when the Raiders come to Florida, get that logo off your uniform," Herlihy said, suggesting the Raiders might "put a daisy on your uniform" as an alternative to their pirate.

The Panthers had no comment on the suit.

I saw this as well...this is just another reason to hate the raiders and al davis. Do we play their sorry asses this year...if we do, this will be my personal "kick fucking ass" game.

I can understand his beef kinda with the Panthers. We have a black Jersey, silver pants, and a silver helmet. Very similar to the Raiders, no doubt.... but the addition of the stipes on the helmet, jersey, and pants set it apart, as does the white numbers on the Jersey.

The argument that it causes damage to the Raiders is absurd...

If you think about it this could be a marketing goldmine for JR. He would be able to sell 4 different jersey's (Black, White, Powder Blue and the California jersey)and 2 different types of helmets (Silver and California). Why fight it.

LOL that is what I was thinking... but then we'd get sued by Detroit for wearing a similar jersey color and silver pants with a silver helmet, and having a predatory feline as our moniker.

Where does it end? It's a slippery slope.

Can't we be like the CFL who had 2 teams at the same time named Roughriders? lol

this is so rediculous.....so do the ravens have to change thier colors when they play in Minnessota ...or the giants in buffalo and houston...

Lets take it a bit further...Green Bay won't be able to play in Atlanta with their logo....to similar to U. of Georgia....or the Bears won't be able to play in Cincinnati where the reds play baseball...the logos are to similar. Pittsburgh and Iowa...Arizona and Louisville....Cleveland and Syracuse.

Thank goodness that Atlanta did a uniform change so that they wouldn't be part of the suit

I'm ok with the colors of our team, just never liked our uniform design or helmet logo worth a shit. I hope we change.

Simple Solution: The Panthers change over to the powder blue uni's making that color the dominant color with the current helmet and black pants or maybe a deeper grey, like carcoal grey. Then with the white jerseys, wear powder blue pants or black pants.

On second thought, to Hell with Al Davis and his pointless lawsuits, he is such a baby! Just kick the Raiders out of the league and start a team in LA.
