NFL | Poole Holds Another Workout - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 16 Apr 2004 13:59:47 -0700

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports NFL draft prospect CB Will Poole (Southern California) held a repeat audition for NFL scouts on Friday, April 16. Poole was measured at 5-feet, 10 1/8-inches and 193 pounds, which is nine pounds heavier than he weighed for his March 24, Pro Day workout. Poole ran the 40-yard dash in the consensus time of 4.54 to 4.55 seconds, had a 33.5-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot long jump and a 4.03 and 6.60 time in the short shuttle and three-cone drill, respectively. All numbers were improvements from his Pro Day workout, which will likely help Poole's draft status, as some scouts had originally regarded him as a first-round prospect at the NFL Scouting Combine. Poole's disappointing Pro Day workout dropped his stock into the second and third round on some draftboards.

Those 40s in the 4.55 range might not be enough to get him drafted before #31. We could easily have either Poole or Straight sitting there at 31, but I still don't think our staff will go secondary in the 1st.
Also - Poole still has that character smudge that could keep him from coming here.

People tend to over value the 40 time w/ CB's. While it is still something to consider, the cone drills and the shuttle show more in the line of change of direction, which CB's do more of. 40 time only really helps when chasing someone down from behind...and your hopefully not drafting guys based on that premise.

A players 40 time can be very important depending on the scheme you run for example if you are playing much man to man you should'nt take a CB running anything slower than a 4.5 IMO.

Make up speed is nice, but not the beat all and end all.

The shuttle is MUCH more important than 40 when related to man cover skills. This isn't a fucking race. The ability to turn quickly and not loose speed is much more important.

Sometimes it is a race. If its a deep pattern, and there's no S help, its a flat out run towards the goal line.

BUT, I agree with you. Its almost always staying with the cuts in a route, or coming forward quicly, NO go back, it was a fake, etc.

I think those character questions are going to be huge. Boomer Rang says the original deal at Boston College was rumored to include stealing and assault. And he says Poole is getting negative comments from everyone whose ever worked with him. I guess that includes at USC. I haven't read this anywhere else, which I think I would have if it was really that bad. My guess is that Fox was out there to talk to Pete Carroll about Poole as much as to watch the workout.

If his character is a concern, I bet we pass. If it's not, he probably won't even be there.

People like to downplay things like 40 times and bench press.

The idea is to have a general standard of strength and athleticism, which BP does, and which 40/vertical do.

Sure, it's allright to not have a blazing 40, and I've not been extremely high on some prospects who suddenly shoot up a couple rounds just because they're 4.3

But, all the same, yeah, 40's important. You like to see a guy playing zone that has the ability to turn on a dime, yeah. But if we're talking about a first round guy, he can't punk out like Howard and not be able to play cover three. You gotta cover a little more groind at the end of games.

For one, I always thought Howard was somewhat stiff.

You don't want to be any slower than those times. But you can give some deep help. If you are stiff, there's no help to be had for that. You'll get beat.

Tall CB generally translates into stiff. Finding a player like a Poole or Robinson that it as fluid at 5'11 or taller is somewhat rare. I fear the new rule will make the taller CB fade away in that it takes away thier most valued trait, the ability to play physically at the point of attack.
