Panthers | Peete Wants To Stay - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
5:34 PT: Updating previous reports, the News & Observer reports Carolina Panthers QB Rodney Peete would like to re-sign with the team, and is pushing for a deal to get done before free agency starts Feb. 28. “I’m trying to push the envelope a little, and hopefully we can get something done before the 28th,” Peete said. “I want to finish my career in Carolina.” Peete also said Monday that if the team does re-sign him, they could trade up in the first round of the NFL Draft to snag one of the top-rated QB prospects

Peete seems like a nice enough guy and all... I just don't see the Panthers doing anything out of their way to sign him by a certain day. Depending on the draft and free agency, will determine their need to keep him around. Either way, I doubt anybody else picks him up, at least to start or pay more than the min for a vet.

Keep Pete sure. Why not? Dump Weinke and sign a solid QB and let Pete back them up. Why is this so hard to do?

I guess we have to play the Price is Right. His wife could be one of the Barker Beauties.

He knows the system, would be a cheap sign, and would allow a years period to groom either Leftwich or Palmer or even Boller (assuming we get A. Johnson in rd 1)

I think Peete's future will not be decided until we decide what our long term plans are for the QB position. If we bring in a veteran who is ready to start right away then Peete is probably gone. If we draft a rookie very high then we will want to get him on the field by the end of the year to Peete makes perfect sense. If we draft a guy but not with our number one pick then it gets more interesting. How long do we want Peete to be the starter while we groom a young guy? Maybe we would rather bring in a little better mid level QB like Charlie Batch to start for a year or two. I think Peete will not get a decision until we know the answers to these questions which means it wont be til long after the 28th.
