He was saying they need more talent. ND typically draws white kids - no shit, they're catholic. In that context, maybe not.

He is probably in his 80s anyway. From a different era and time. He probably doesn't realize how some of these moron reporters will turn it into their big scoop.

It would have been ok if he had said; "affording more opportunity to minorities to attend this place of higher learning and partake in athletics" instead of lowering standards to bring in the black athlete. It's all about semantics. The truth is you can't win without black athletes, and that isn't an insult to black athletes.

I'd have to look at statistics to get down to the real facts, but I suspect that there are similar percentages of white athletes who are have low academic scores as to the percentages of black atheletes who have low academic scores.

Just some anecdotal information: I went to Furman University, where the atheletes are not cut as much slack academically as most schools (and further, Furman is a tough school academically), and there were still a significant portion of the football players who were black.

It's just as likely that the whole academic-atheletic issue is a psychological aspect that applies moreso to highly talented atheletes that to a race (blacks). That is, the highly talented atheletes get catered to, or rather flat out babied, and they get used to folks bending the rules for them.
