Panthers | Favors Added - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
7:57 PT: According to Pat Yasinskas of the Charlotte Observer, the Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent LB Greg Favors (Bills). No financial details were released.

He’s been a starter. Hurt a lot last couple a years, but he was good with the Titans.

Weakside player. He’ll compete with Witherspoon for that spot. Still would like to see us draft some depth here midround

What Piper said, although I don't see him fighting for a starting position. Young guy with some potential if he can stay healthy. He'll be fighting extremely hard to make the season roster.

Well, let's see. Assume Morgan and Fields, with WW pencilled in. We have Allen, Marquis Smith and Favors. And add in Jackson who we seem to have on call as needed.

Smith and Favors have both been starters, though Favors had more impact. Both are primarily weakside players, Smith actually started at safety.

That's actually decent depth, assuming health. I'd have to assume Favors would be the more likely challenge for WW weakside than Smith. Getting Favors resolves that need largely. Maybe we ease off that mid round pick. Still, can't be hard to upgrade Smith.

Although he worked mainly inside last yr - I'd consider Witherspoon at WLB. At least give him a shot. His athletic ability should allow him to move over IMO.

You forgot

You forgot about Towns.

Towns is in da middle. Needs to stay dare too. :D

Towns is still under contract? I thought he a UFA. RFA?

Yeah, that kind of clears up the depth. Having Towns in camp would make me feel better about the mike depth.

BTW, I agree about Witherspoon Shock. I’d like to see him take the weakside spot, and would be more excited if he beat out a guy like Favors to get it. I’m always anxious about linebacker depth. With Favors in, maybe we got enough for camp with some UFA college guys.

Yep. Solid, cheap depth, good insurance against the idea that Witherspoon might struggle some. Puts off drafting a LB for a year, so if we go for a defensive player after the first day it can be a rotation DT or a push at safety. I don't believe a corner in 4 or later will really be worthwhile. With Jackson likely to stick in Cincy, and other needs in the draft more likely to be needed, this is a decent move. I don't know a whole lot about his coverage skills or his game intelligence but hopefully he can fill WW's weaknesses here.
