Add Carolina and Philadelphia to the list of teams interested in trading for Seahawks guard Rob Sims, who started 16 games in 2007 and 14 in '09 but played in only one game in 2008 before a season-ending pectoral injury. On Thursday, Sims, who has been asked by Seahawks officials to stay away from offseason workouts, signed his one-year, $1.101 million qualifying offer to help facilitate a deal. Sims, 26, had previously been rumored to be heading to Chicago or Detroit. Sims can play either guard spot and is a physical in-line blocker but may be a bad fit for the zone-blocking scheme that offensive line coach Alex Gibbs will implement with the Seahawks.

RFA is a way of improving without changing the compensatory UFA balance, certainly.

I really don't see why more teams don't use RFA to bring in guys for workouts for scouting purposes or to look at them for next year when they're UFA.

For my money we don't need Vincent or this guy. Bernadeau and Schwartz gained experience, and maybe the light's going to come on for Robinson with an opening.

Sidenote on this the former Redskins guy that does cap stuff on footballoutsiders said something about how the team does little to no research on restricted free agents, preferring to work only on UFAs. I have no idea how prevalent that is with other teams but it's odd nonetheless, I guess teams just figure that anyone they can get a bargain on the other team matches and they just acted as GM for someone else so they risk the wait til UFA (at least back when RFA was year 3).

I've always hated RFA. I mean, the mechanic of allowing teams to keep 4th year guys is fine, but the compensation and all of that's a bizarre thing. Almost no one gets signed. I wouldn't sign much of anyone's RFA. The second round tender option only muddied it worse. It doesn't help that we traditionally would overspend on it every year, but we did well at that this year. We didn't overspend on anyone but necessities, we didn't tender some guys, and one of them we brought back.

But, from a free-to-bring-in standpoint, I'd try to pull anyone in that I could, and at the worst use it to re-scout them. Work them out, talk to them, learn what you can. A visit costs you $2000 of flying out, back, and a hotel room. It's a hundred million dollar a year business.


Maybe the high number of guys not being tendered this year in a larger pool of RFAs would help change things in the next CBA, but I have no idea how to make it better. Seems like in the event that teams did sign other teams' RFAs, a lot of them included poison pills.

Look for the Eagles to trade form Sims since they just acquired all thos mid round picks.

Don't know much about Sims. Not sure why we would want to bring him in especially if we had to give up picks. I'm guessing they want Bernadeu in there, hoepfully he can hold up.
