I think we need to account for what a fucking mess the off-season was in terms of staffing. Washington promoted, Brady Hoke added late. Curtis Fuller—that was unforunate as fuck, as well. Al Holcomb departs, too.

In his defense, he didn't throw the flag on 26 in the EZ yesterday.
But that's about the only thing I'll defend him on.

The defense has been a problem with getting off the field on 3rd and longs. Though they eventially do get off the field many times before letting the other team score, field position suffers. Few turnovers, as opposed to say, 2015, when there were tons, giving the ball to more offensive touches/opportunities.
Red zone defense has been bad.
Run defense has been kind solid, save for a few huge runs through huge holes where the LBs have over-pursued and dl/lbs washed out, etc. Bad tackling at times by everyone. They've consistently played soft and their zone sucks.
But still, with close losses, the offense has failed us even more. Turnovers, shit execution at inopportune moments and undisciplined play with penalties, etc.
Norv hasn't been the problem either. We can biotch about play calls, but when the same play call is executed well, it becomes a great play call. Lack of execution, bad throws and bad decisions as well as general fuckups like fumbles, etc. have contributed to lost games as much or more than failed defensive plays.
For cam to say publicly this is his greatest season is a joke. By the numbers, comp %, sure for stat geeks, but win translations, no. Part of this could be the oline, sure. They've been below average for sure.
Cam plays like shit for a coupla possessions, then he makes a couple great throws and great runs, but that doesn't always make up for shit consistently. He's wildly inconsistent with accuracy, especially under pressure. It's hard to tell if the receivers have no separation or the oline lets up of that he takes too long to make a decision. It's all of it I'm certain.
Clock management by him, norv and/or the powers that be has generally sucked as well.
You simply can't hang all this on the defense.
