Carstens' performance pays off
With a $305,000 base salary, defensive tackle Jordan Carstens was one of the lowest-paid Carolina Panthers last season. But Carstens recently received a big check.
Carstens topped the Panthers list of performance pool pay at $232,798. The performance pool is set up to reward players who get extensive playing time but don’t have big salaries. Carstens entered last season as a backup, but stepped into a starting role after Kris Jenkins was injured in the season opener.
Each NFL team has $2.48 million to spread in the performance pool and the money does not count against the salary cap. It’s based on a complicated formula that strongly considers the amount of snaps played. Here’s a break down of what Panthers received in performance pool pay for last season:
