One year wonders

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Houston Texans have released LB Charlie Clemons.<<<


Clemons is a 31 yr old in his 8th season, just one year with the Texans, 3 with the Rams and 3 with the Saints. In 2001 with the Saints he put up near pro bowl numbers:

75 TCKL, 13.5 SCK, 2 FF, 1 FR, 1 INT, 7 PD

Every other year was a fraction of ’01. In 2000 he must have been injured because he had zeros across the board. I’d be curious to know what the deal was with Clemons. Maybe he was on the roids in ’01.
I’m also wondering if you guys are aware of any other one year wonders.

Yeah, he was an explosive player for the Saints when he was healthy. You hate to see guys with great talent that can't avoid injury.

One year wonders? Does Anthony Johnson ring a bell?

Lamar Lathon. For 1996, he was fantastic. Maybe some in 95. He was available to us because he was frequently injured. In 97 he was injured right off the bat and mostly ineffective, and then he was too injured to play.

AJ could qualify, but he was a modestly talented guy who was finally in the right situation. The he was somewhat injured, but mostly, the situation changed. For some reason I dont think that meets the spirit of one year wonders.

In Clemons case, I think its a mental or attidude thing too. I don't think that was the case with Lamar, and certainly not with AJ. Of course, that's not a requirement of being a OYW

In Clemons one good year, he was only good at one thing. Getting sacks. Most of which came on third down when he lined up as the elephant. He's always been a horrible tackler for a MLB, and really isn't fast enough to play outside.

There was some OLB taken by Denver, maybe, in the 1st round that was similar. Croel, maybe? He had a tremendous rookie year, then never did anything else. He was very fast off the edge, I heard. When people adjusted to what he did well, he had nothing else. Maybe Clemmons was the same. I think alot of OYWs, that aren't an injury deal, are like that in some way. Very one dimensional, then opponents adjust.
