norton personal jail cell

okay, so i'm not a big fan of norton stuff, but the guy i'm working with had his computer set up by somebody who is a big fan. so now there's a problem with mail.

basically, if he sends out a large attachment, it will sometimes fail. what USED to happen (pre-norton intrusion) was the mail would go to the outbox and it'd sit there till it was fully uploaded. if it took too long, a message would come up asking if it should wait or abort. clicking "wait" would tell the system to just keep plugging away till stuff was sent, at which point the mail would finish up and go to the sent box -- verifying that it had actually gone out.

now with norton, the option of wating has been removed. if it takes longer than a minute, the thing just seems to abort the upload. also, it goes DIRECTLY into the sent box and later generates an error report when it fails (if it fails) and asks you to re-send the mail that's already in the sent folder. i've gone in and told the virus checker not to monitor outgoing mail. still, tho, it seems to intercept the mail and put it through this torture. i've turned off the progress bar for the personal security checker (which i'm sure is just a gui feature and not actually disabling any functionality).

how can i tell norton to lay off the sent mail?

yeah, i think that's all the settings (i'm not near that computer at the moment).

there's a little icon at the bottom of the screen that seems to indicate the outgoing mail is outgoing... but if you mouse over it, it vanishes!

the main problem is that even telling it to not scan outgoing mail, some component of norton is still intercepting the traffic. the smtp host is still the remote host so i don't understand how norton is interjecting itself into the process and i have NO idea how to get it to stop. it's a bit frustrating because we'll send out an important piece of mail and learn some time later that it mysteriously didn't actually send. our confidence that mail is going out okay is a bit shot at the moment.
