The NFL said Monday that a 30-yard touchdown run by Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams against the Washington Redskins should not have counted because of an inadvertent whistle.

The league said that the Panthers should have instead been offered the ball at the 17-yard line - at the point where line judge Thomas Symonette blew his whistle because he mistakenly thought Williams had stepped out of bounds. Under the rules, Carolina could have also chosen to replay the down at the 30.

Williams kept running and was awarded the first-half touchdown in the Panthers' 21-13 victory Sunday. Redskins linebacker Perry Riley said he stopped pursuing the play because he heard the whistle.

Referee Carl Cheffers said after the game that the officials decided the whistle wasn't blown until Williams reached the end zone and that it didn't affect the play's outcome, so the touchdown ruling stood. Replays show the whistle was blown earlier, but an inadvertent whistle is not reviewable by replay.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said the league had no choice but to acknowledge the error.

''They had to admit that, even if they didn't want to. ... I didn't know it was that bad until I looked at the film,'' Shanahan said. ''That was an obvious mistake.''

DW was at like the 12 yard line and beat the LB's angle when the whistle blew. Riley was beat by about 2 steps and should have easily seen that DW in fact wasnt out of bounds.

Riley let up because his loser ass was beat and it really wasnt that bad at all Shanny.

Quit trying to defer your loser ass comments and admit you got whipped by the better team on the day.

how about admitting that they shouldn't have blown the fucking whistle in the first place? That couldn't hurt.

And admit that when the refs are standing behind the center blocking the snap, they shouldn't penalize the team for a delay?

Some of these refs are pretty bad, being able to pull them off the field for replacement is mainly why I was on the league's side during the lockout.

Now, pull some of those MFs off the field.

At most it was a 4 point gift to the Panthers. The way the skins defense was playing, it may have actually been a gift to the skins... by getting their sorry asses off the field and saving some clock for the offense.

Shanahan is now 0-2 vs Ron Rivera. Additionally, his winning percentage in Washington is now below Steve Spurrier and Jim Zorn. On top of those horrible footnotes, he has a grand total of one playoff win without John Elway as his quarterback. John Fox has six with Jake Delhomme and Tim Tebow. And since 1999, Shanahan has won as many division titles (1) as Todd Haley, Tony Sparano, Jim Mora Jr, Jim Haslett, and Pete Carroll.

Win more games, you whiny, cut-blocking fraud.
