Since I'm new to the area...........whats a pretty plant for my patio? Some I can keep in a po - it would get the afternoon sun - and I would like it to bloom.

Is there anything I could get that I can put one of those new decorative metal tripod kinda things in a large pot and have the plant growing up it??? In Ohio I would know what to go get..........down here I ain't so sure.

Petunias - full to part sun. Pink, red, purple, white.

Salvia works well too. Purple, peach, and red are common colors

Marigolds keep mosquitos away. yellow and orange

Take a trip to Home Depot or Lowes in April. Anything in an orange container will work fine in a sunny spot. Just make sure you keep them watered everyday. It gets hot here and the soil dries out pretty quick in containers.

Plant both the first week in April and you'll have 10-20' of vine by May15.

Black Eyed Susans are good for pots too. Yellow with a black center.

red cardinal vine. From 3 seeds here. did I mention hummingbirds absolutely love it?

purple hyacinth vine. 3 seeds again. I kept it trimmed by just snipping off a couple feet once a week.

Both of these vines seed themselves. You can collect them and never have to buy them again. They'll stay in dry storage for 2-3 years.

another good vine is the moonflower vine. Usually white and has a nice smell in early evening when the flowers open.

Jasmine is also a good one. Stays green to redish in winter instead of dying like the three I mentioned above. Confederate Jasmine has the strongest odor. Some people like it, some don't. Reminds me of the smell from Stargazer lillies.

You posted some real pretty pics......I need to take some pictures of what I have to work with and post them for you. I love that vine with the red flowers. I have this brick wall between the apartments and it would look great growing on that if I can do it. That can work out of a pot?

Attracting humingbirds sounds wonderful........I have a feeder I can put out too.......I have been warned about ants since I am close to a woods and I don't want to put out anything that attracts bees either obviously.

The cardinal can be grown in a pot, but it won't get nearly that big. Maybe 1/3 the size which honestly, is still going to cover an area of about 10' x 10'.

Home Depot has the seeds. It's labelled as the Cardinal Climber.

If you grow it against a brick wall, you're going to need something to get it to climb. It's not like Ivy that climbs by attaching to the brick. It winds itself around things as it climbs. All you need are a few 6' pieces of stick or bamboo in the pot and it will do the rest.

I used to get hummingbirds, bumble bees, and the occassional wasp, but even with all those flowers, it wasn't terrible. They come around in the early morning and late afternoon.
