He is still under contract next year but for a pretty penny. He isn't the same player as 2-3 years ago but he is unquestioned one of the leaders of this team. Will the ask him to renegotiate his deal and if so for how much and how long.

Hard to say. he's showing wear - not including this week's injury - and in a secondary that is far from stellar, he's not showing up as the heavy hitter, he's not breaking up passes. His tackle stats are still good, but he's somewhat looking like that average player now, not the guy who explodes whether the talent's great or if it's given up.

They were talking extension and Minter was pushing hard for it. A year and change out from his being a FA. So maybe he felt it, wanted to be secure.

That makes me wonder if part of his problems are coaching. The whole D has looked like flaming dog crap and I just wonder if part of it is coaching and the other part is laziness from being fat and happy that they went to the big dance last year. :huh: Just my guess.

He's never been more than a slightly better than average player. Those players often do well when surrounded by good players, and not when they are not.

Minter was talking extension, not the Panthers (for big money anyway.) Word was they want to keep him, and so do I, but not for Pro Bowl numbers. I suspect they offer him an extension for about 2 mil a year. If he doesnt take it, I bet they let him play out his contract and test the market in 2006. I don't think we can afford to cut him and lose another piece. Since Minter was quoted early this year as saying he was a Pro Bowl caliber player who just had never been recognized, I doubt he takes it. Shoot, he thought the secondary played well last year. Big time denial.

agree with the first point, but . . .

I think that they DID play well last year (especially late in the season) and Minter was a big part of that . . . HOWEVER, that was LAST year and he was a year younger and fresher. I am also willing to bet that our FO will not offer him the kind of moola (or the additional yearS) that he wants. Half of the starting 30 something players in the league must think that they are overlooked pro bowlers who will be able to magically continue playing at that same perceived high level until they are in their upper 30s and beyond.
