<<DAVIS NEARING THE END OF THE ROAD: The Carolina Panthers ended RB Stephen Davis' season by placing him on injured reserve this weekend because of a lingering knee injury. That injury may now threaten more than the rest of his season but the rest of his career as well.

FOXSports.com has learned that Davis will see Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham on Monday as a precursor to getting the controversial microfracture surgery. It turns out that a piece of bone cartilage has chipped off in his knee * such a surgery would place Davis' playing days in jeopardy.

The microfracture surgery requires a doctor to "prick" a bone in the knee forming a coagulation of a thick, blood-like fluid that fills in the chipped off area. If he doesn't get the surgery, Davis' knee will likely continue to give him problems as the loss of cartilage allows the bones in the knee to rub together and swelling will likely persist. If he gets the surgery, the recovery is quite lengthy and even then the results have been inconsistent at best.

Such an injury has ended the careers or hindered the final days of such players as Terrell Davis and Jason Sehorn. The Panthers other running back DeShaun Foster was one of a very select few who fought back from microfracture surgery, although the team did not allow him to play again full-time for over a year after initially injuring his knee.

Considering Davis' age, such a surgery and injury places his career in jeopardy.

Monetarily, I think we really have to deal with him for at least another year. It would be very hard, as well, for this team to simply give up on him. However, there's a very strong chance that he's just another in the long line of Panthers that had one fine year and nothing past - Derrick Moore, AJ, Lane, Jeffers, etc

Well, that's the worst case.

Since he will hit zero incentives, his cap hit next year will be somewhat low. So we can carry him into June. But with Foster in a contract year, I think this raises the bar on having a versatile running back, likely IMO from the draft.

You know I just don't want him to be somebody that has trouble walking...I hope the surgery goes well and he's able to lead a normal life after football.

He'll carry well on past June. I don't see them cutting him. Honest. I'm not saying he's got anything left, because he really did take an un-necessary beating here at times. But we'll be into the season before we really know, and I think it's just a matter of acceptance, patience, and hoping to hell that the 3rd RB can be a bruiser and that we have a WR who can play the punt.
