McPherson runs his way into QB plan
Firebirds rookie being considered by DeBerg as starter for Sunday's home game.

Firebirds coach Steve DeBerg didn't rule out giving Adrian McPherson his first professional start at quarterback Sunday.

McPherson played surprisingly well off the bench Monday in relief of Tony Zimmerman in the Firebirds' 34-25 loss at Detroit. The former Florida State quarterback completed 13-of-20 passes for 172 yards with two touchdowns. His one interception came on a Hail Mary pass at the end of the game.

McPherson also rushed seven times for 55 yards -- a huge total for an Arena Football League quarterback -- and a touchdown. His 55 rushing yards are 15 short of the team's single-game record.

"Adrian is going to play some," DeBerg said Thursday as the Firebirds (0-3) prepared for the game at Conseco Fieldhouse against Chicago (3-0). "It'll be determined later how much he plays. Both the quarterbacks are getting work, and you have to prepare two quarterbacks anyway."

Monday was the first game action for McPherson since 2002 when he was kicked off the Florida State team for various legal problems.

"The past year has been tough on me," said McPherson, 20. "I've continued to work hard and continued to learn day in and day out from coach DeBerg. Just to get a chance to run out there Sunday will be a great thing."

The 6-3 McPherson, who ran for 24 yards on a bootleg on his first professional play, said he won't be nervous if given the start.

"I feel like I came in here with a lot to prove to everyone," he said. "That'd be a great chance to get out there and show what I can do."
