They're moving over to the 4-3, so a premier pass rushing DE is a must. It's something they didn't have as they transitioned this off-season. Now, they appear to have one, although he is going to have to prove himself at the next level. If I am Casserly, I would have tried to trade down with the Jets, allowing NY to take Bush (the guy I truly feel they want). Saints likely would have taken Williams, perhaps Brick. Either way, Tennessee is looking QB. At #4, you would have had the opportunity to take Brick or Williams. (And I would have taken D'Brick in Houston).

It's a hopelessly retarded move from a number of perspectives.
#1) Williams is good, but not great. He has insane talent so maybe he'll be great one day, but he completely underachived at State. As noted previously, even many of his sacks this year came with him unblocked or blocking by a TE/RB, and this was his first year with more than 6 sacks. That's not good considering that he was hardly ever double teamed due to Manny Lawson (the better player in college) being across from him.
#2) As a P.R. move, this is a disaster. Houston fans wanted Vince Young or Reggie Bush. Unless Mario Williams has 10 sacks every season and makes the Pro Bowl every year, fans are going to give him no end of hell for not being the guy they wanted, and Casserly is going to be run out of town in a hearse.
I have to think this has something to do with passing on Peppers in '02 and regretting it ever since.

Winning will breed a positive image within the community. Problem is, Williams (IMO) doesn't bring them any closer to becoming a winner than Bush would've, and he certainly doesn't satisfy the hunger of the consensus of fans in Houston.
And, I really think they whiffed by missing out on Ferguson. I guess they just want to keep sucking up front.
