Mad as hell

I guess I should be thankful that it has taken all the way until week 13 to blow my stack about the Panthers. The season started on an undefeated note. The locals jumping on the bandwagon so fast you would swear an H2 logo was on the side. The pain of the first loss being medicated by a retribution win and national media attention. ESPN and Fox doing studio interviews of Jake Delhomme and Stephan Davis was fast becoming the norm across the nation. Football analysts not only taking the time to study our game film, but actually use it as examples for things you SHOULD do! Panthers always the #1 seed in the playoff brackets. I mean c'mon now, we had a 'He Hate Me' Christmas!!! You cannot deny that we had arrived......Early!
I have been feeling so good walking out of that stadium each and every week. Everyone has felt that good. Living in this town with a winning sports team is pretty cool I think regardless of your outlook on pro athletics. People around the country talking on a positive light about events in your home are never a bad thing. Makes you feel proud and each win is like a merit badge acknowledging a job well done for choosing a good area to raise your family. But some real thugs from Philly came in and mugged our asses. The Panthers were exposed as a playoff pretender that is missing some key ingredients to any chance in the post season.
First and most importantly, where in the hell is our defense? We have the NFL sack leader. We have a constant warm bed in the infirmary for #55. We all know that, repeat after me "Our secondary sucks". These are not new things, but what is new is that they no longer seem to work for us. As each week goes by, our defense sinks lower and lower into the sea of mediocrity. Regardless of the billing, the Cardiac Defense is fastly going into cardiac arrest. I am mad as hell that I might have to accept the fact that losing Jack 'Axe-Man' Del Rio just may have had a negative impact on the team.
Next comes the kicker debate. Going into training camp and the pre-season I wanted Opie Graham to be the starter. The kid was a good kicker with health and youth. Kasey did not seem worth the risk with all his injuries and missed games. I have seen quite enough of the Richie Cunningham's of this world and long for stability at the position. Shayne seemed to offer that. Then John comes in as the starter and goes perfect for the first half of the season. I took my licks and ate crow on that preseason wish but now I am mad as hell that to know I turned on my own better judgment to appease the masses. It gnaws at me that I turned lemming for the team and am now stuck pondering my impalement to a road sign at the bottom of some rocky cliff.
I have an unequivocal despise for any offers of concession I have granted our offensive (in every way imaginable) coordinator Dan Henning in recent months. Is the man not capable of understanding the concept of adaptation? It has been over twenty years since you won every season with John Riggins and the Hogs. Davis is a horse, but that is just a damn tool in the belt Mr. Henning. It was probably fitting that the Philthy One's marched into Ericcson with a balanced attack of a fast running game that setup nice play action passes. Coach, I do not care if we power run the ball for 60 minutes or pass 50 times for 400 yards. To win you have to score more points than the other guy. There are no points given for style. Brad Childress gave a little clinic on how to take out a strong defense with a pass orientated attack. A loss is always bad, but to lose with rounds still in the clip means you did not really expend enough energy on a solution. I do not think it would be too much to ask for management to let Henning know right away his job and future with this organization is under a performance review.
We have completed week 13 and we are currently 8-4 and still hold a good lead on the NFC South. We have the personnel here to win most if not all of the remaining 4 games and host at least one playoff game. From a individual statistics standpoint the Panthers won yesterdays game on all fronts. Better QB rating, higher rushing yards, more sacks, more interceptions and fewer turnovers. The Cardiac Cats have all been about individuals stepping up to the plate and overcoming mistakes. That works for the summer portion of the NFL schedule but come winter that bullshit dog no longer hunts. We do not get our merit badges for NFC offensive player of the week or get to take any civic pride for the number of players in uniform we have in Hawaii.
I am mad that instead of a team we may have nothing more than a group of individuals all too comfortable in relying on some mythical karma to come down and carry them off the field like the end of a Disney Movie. In the coming weeks I need to see this team get a little more aggressive The hits have to be harder, the runs more purposeful, the passes more frequent and on target. Scoring points needs to take precedence over following the game script. Kickers need to work out that stupid shit in their minds while at Bible study so we do not have to witness that embarrassing crap again. I am ready to kill off the Cardiac Cats moniker and start crushing some teams in December. To hell with all this hanging around in games like a boxer. You knock out your opponent in round 1 and keep punching him until he can no longer stand upright. To be a playoff team you need to dominate some games. We did that with Atlanta several weeks ago and have the chance to do it once again Sunday night. I want to see some angry players the rest of this month who will get mad as hell over the idea of losing any of the remaining games...
