He wont be picked up by anyone this year for any amount becuase he wasnt cut he was deactivated. When he is officially dumped this offseason his contract wont be worth the ink that was used to print it. So, he basicaly starts over from scratch with a new team and contract.

once he gets through waivers, he is free agent...no contract. a team could claim him off waivers and pay him 5 mil next year and then cut him again or re-negotiate the contract.

he's not being waived... he will be with the Bucs the rest of this year until he is outright released after the season... similar to the way Lamar Smith was with Carolina last year

they are most likely doing that for cap purposes. they take the cap hit from his bonus when they cut him...they wait until a certain date and they spread it over two years. unless i'm confused with NHL rules, he'll go through the waiver process whenever he is released. his contract becomes void if no team picks him up.

But I agree, in that what you point out about his salary may keep him from being TRADED.

that must be it. the browns receiver must have been under the limit.

he had a 13 million dollar signing bonus on a 8 year contract signed in 2000....half of the signing bonus allocation has cleared through this year, so TB has another $6.5 mill. to allocate. If they trade him after the season is over, they take a dead dollar hit in that amount on the $6.5 mil. and some other team gets stuck with the crazy contract numbers. I say he is cut on June 1, 2004, and they will have $1.625 mil. hit in 2004, but they get rid of his $5.0 mil. base number, and they they get hit with the $4.875 mil. in 2005, but he is off their books.

It's a little bit weird. If he's vested (4 years) he doesnt go through waivers. He's a FA immediately during the offseason, and during the season until the trading deadline. Then between the trading deadline and the end of the season, everyone goes through waivers. I thought this was strange under the Skins cut Deon Sanders last year so he could play with the Raiders. Lots of teams put in claims. So he just stayed retired. So the purpose of that little kink was to prevent playoff teams from loading up on good players for their playoff run. And if he was claimed, then its like a trade, and the bonus acceleration is all this year.

But in February, he will not go through waivers. This is assuming they can't trade him. I bet Detroit might be interested for a 3rd or so. Wouldnt that be funny?
