    Panthers land first target
Submitted by Darin on Sat, 2006-03-11 19:15.
The Carolina Panthers have struck quickly again, landing Baltimore defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu Saturday afternoon.
The 6-foot-5, 350-pounder agreed in principle to a five-year, $23 million deal, one which will likely be signed early next week.
His signing provides an immediate upgrade to their run defense, and coupled with Friday’s deal with running back DeShaun Foster (and an expected one with backup quarterback Chris Weinke), crosses off a big chunk of their off-season to-do list.
The 27-year-old Kemoeatu was their first target, with general manager Marty Hurney on the phone with his agent shortly after free agency started Saturday morning.

Ok. Our run defense was overrated, so I'm happy about this. We've needed another anchor up front and, hopefully, Jenkins can stay on the field. The cost is somewhat questionable, but we've added a very good player.

23 MILLION. That sounds like a reach. I don't anything about the guy, but based on the other thread, this sounds like a big reach. I hope it pays off huge, but if we commited to a guy that doesnt fit our scheme and we paid what I think sounds like a lot of money to do it, than that is a reach.

How much money do we have invested in the Dline now, $100 million? I would bet its tops in the league.

It's a wide body that eats up blocks - something that we don't have. I don't see the downside. Yeah, it's probably a reach, but I'll take it. Lucas was a reach, but we addressed a need position and it paid off. Hopefully, this will play out the same way.

This is great. If Jenks is better, he and Kemoeatu will be arguably the best DT tandem in the league next year. Moorehead and Carstens are quality depth. ALso insurance for jenks.

Pas had him rated as the #8 overall free agent available and best DT. Scouts Inc take...

"Kemoeatu has very good size and excellent strength in both his upper and lower body. He has long arms, makes great use of his hands and gets good separation from blockers. He does a great job of shedding and going to the ball. He has the versatility to line up at the defensive tackle spot as well as the nose tackle position in the 3-4 scheme. He does an excellent job of playing a two-gap control style and it is difficult to knock him off the ball. He shows that he is capable of controlling the line of scrimmage in the run game and has very good play recognition. He is a powerful tackler and is capable of getting a good push in the middle as a pass rusher. While he can control the line of scrimmage, he lacks initial foot quickness and explosiveness in his get off. He is very limited in running ability and does not have the range to make plays on the sideline. He will not run many plays down, and is not a guy who is going to penetrate the running lanes and be a disruptive force. He does not show much in terms of pass-rush technique other than a strong bull rush. He plays with a good level of intensity and if he can improve his quickness and running ability, he can develop into a very solid player in the middle."
