After concentrating on one set of assignments his first minicamp, the Panthers essentially threw three playbooks at him in June, so he could replace Smith, Muhsin Muhammad or Ricky Proehl if need be.

That doesn't say that he has absorbed any of them totally. I would bet that the Moose and Proehl books have been set aside for a later time.

Actually I read an article saying that he absorbed his first playbook in a few hours. THAT'S pretty imporessive.

That became obvious at the first minicamp after the draft when receivers coach Richard Williamson saw Colbert had mastered the playbook after reading it for only a couple of hours. Colbert's poise and maturity continued to become obvious in the preseason. Something not many people expected at draft time became apparent in the preseason.

Wow. That's... odd.

Keep in mind with this article that they're basically noting Colbert's role within the team and that he'd have to look at a play from both Smith and Muhammad's positions, and if 3 WR, from Proehl's as well. That's a little more challenging.

But there aren't 3 playbooks. There's still just one, which still has just one route tree, and contains the same plays.

Hmmm, what does it say about that playbook when a rook can master it in three hours

It says Dan Hennings designed it.

a very mature rookie the played 4 full season at USC behind Pete Carroll, Moose should draw the double teams again, Colbert WILL get open
